Some things I saw today

1. a big Boeing with a flip-up nose, was at least a 747, but I think bigger. No markings except the tail number. :D
2. a minesweeper!-- had wheels on the front, tracks in back, and a big set of flailing chains. It was on a flatbed, heading south on the base road.
3. CUCV pickup with Hummer rims, and no lift. So I guess you CAN fit 37's on a stock GM 1-ton. Good to know. But they don't wheel here. Mines. See 2.
4. the cleanest up-armored Hummer yet, super clean design. For the "security forces", and they are rocking a box-fed .50 on the roof. With a safari cover thing for shade. :D
5. a tiny black man from the Kingdom of Benin. We are training some of their troops. He was really small. And very friendly, we had dinner with him.
6. afterburners glowing blue in the night sky, from an F15 I think. They are so loud, it's like being inside thunder I tell you, and I don't think I could EVER get tired of seeing them take off.
7. a C17 doing a combat landing, which looks a lot like a crash and must be a hoot from the cockpit. Just a big corkscrew dive, right into the runway. :D
8. a Predator taking off. They sound like angry snowmobiles to me, and look kind of a like a retarded flying fish with a bulbous head. But they mean NO PILOTS to crash or be captured, and I love them. :D
9. the full moon over the Afghan plains-- the sky here is kind of a glowy purply gray at night, due to the dust I think... but it's a different COLOR too.
10. Attack ships burning off the shoulder of Orion.

:D

that is all

There is a very good reason for it sounding like a snowmbile. They actually have a snowmobile engine.

Huh, I didn't know that. Guess that explains it LOL

Jason, no they haven't. I am supposed to get clarified tomorrow. The guards say sure, go ahead, no pics inside the buildings, but the sign on the gate says "NO PHOTOGRAPHY---- USE OF DEADLY FORCE AUTHORIZED", so I'd like to be a bit more clear if at all possible. There are no such restrictions in the direction of the planes though, I just am always working.

That's crazy. My friends father was in charge of a lot of the development of the unmanned aircraft for the Air force and later for L3.

My wife works at L3 and has been heavily involved with Predator among other high profile projects.

Predators have been used to take out the enemy with missiles. I may be wrong on the snowmobile engine though. I know one of them had a snowmobile engine but I could be getting them confused. I remember talking to the maintainers on one of my Iraq trips and was surprised at how small the propeller was in comparison to the rest of it.

Yeah, this was a Boeing, not a C-5, though watching them do combat landings is way cooler than watching the Boeing. :D

That Predator might have been a Global Hawk, hard to say which runway it was taking off from.

This sounds a lot like where I work. What is really weird is that we have the right to use deadly force if we SUSPECT you have possession of something you shouldn't. I am a little jealous of you there Tacoma. Travel to exotic places, cool sights, land mines, and some killer aircraft. Jealous I tell ya'. Good luck!

You said it sounded like an angry snowmobile? THen it was either the Predator or the Reaper (a larger version with more payload than Predator), as the Global Hawk has a single jet engine, no prop...

I thought there was a cargo variant of the 747 with a flip nose...
