So I go to home depot to buy some chop saw blades and grinding discs, and due to the large lines use the self checkout, which I have used before with success. Well right off the bat it asks english or spanish. So I push english, but it goes to spanish. THEN I CAN'T EVEN FIGURE OUT HOW TO GO BACK BECAUSE THE DAMN PROMPTS ARE IN SPANISH!!! Shouldn't they have little english words under the spanish incase of the mistake. Pissed me off. Had to ask someone to translate spanish!!! Tyraid over:mad2:

I disagree, this isn't a racest type comment at all, but an oversiteby the programmers of EVERY D@MN Electronic device known to man. Same thing happens on the cell phone too! Can't ever figure out how to get it back to English because.......

I'm still naive enough to believe if we all sent letters to our representatives, things would change.

I think that is BS

I have only met 1 representative that had common sense and/or the desire to help others.

everyone else just has their own interests at heart or lacks any real power.

call me stupid, but I think that the people gave up power some time ago to apathy.

it would take a might big movement to make any real change, and letters ain't quite gunna cut it.

So, if an elected representative recieved letters from their constituents with a majority voice saying (we'll use this topic as an example---insert your favorite 'environmental' access issue here) remove Spanish from state documents they would say no?

Let's say the majority of the letters the rep receives are supporting Spanish in official publications. What can the rep do? The people he is charged to represent have spoken. They actually have those documents (and I bet they keep them in a lot of cases) to back up their 'vote'.

I'd bet the actual public opinion is different (as evidenced by the 'official language' issue a few years ago that was on the ballot---something like 75% supported English as the official language but it's lost to the special interests that have twisted the meaning of an actual vote into something meaningless), but the rep can only go by what is communicated to them. If YOU don't do your part about issues you feel strongly about, YOU only have yourself to blame. That's the way this type of government is supposed to work and I believe it can work that way. It doesn't currently, but if more candidates keep getting voted out of office for not listening to their constituents, the ones that are left are going to take notice.

A few letters make a difference sometimes. Write, put up flyers, wear T-shirts, whatever it takes. I had a nice, taped debate on the capitol steps when the 'tards marched protesting English-only on state documents. They cut it of course, but for about 10 minutes, a whole bunch of people were paying attention to the other side. That might have got a few people thinking again.
The last Tooele county trails meeting, same thing. A mere fraction of the population of this county showed up, and it was the people who did that got heard. I haven't seen any surveys being mailed out, so it looks like those who were there are the opinions on record. That's great when it's your cause being championed-- so what's unimportant enough not to do something about???
Would you draw the line at English-optional? How many languages on your tax forms??? Is it ok for illegal aliens to draw Social Security benefits? Most of that stuff doesn't just happen.

Marc, you... y.... you've brought me back to the light!
