UPDATES

This trip is open to all. I'll be on my motorcycle but 4x4s are welcomed as well (we may end up traveling at different paces though so be prepared for that). It's believed that you must be street licensed, so make sure you are (or ride at your own risk :D)

How doable would HITR trail be on a motorcycle? HITR is a trail that has always been on my to-do list, I was thinking it may be a fun trail to do on a bike. I'm guessing you could get all the way in in a day on a bike, setup a base camp and spend a day or two hiking and exploring???

I'm planning this trip for probably early spring time. Anyone is welcome to join in. I'll be riding my motorcycle from Riverton, all vehicle types are welcome and if you want to meet anywhere along the way, that's fine...even if you want to meet at the trail head. I'll post up my proposed route this afternoon. Anyone that would be interested in going, lets post up some suggested dates.

100%, there are some moto trip reports on Bogley.com

Technically it is only open to street-legal vehicles within the GCNRA boundary, I know there are plenty that do it otherwise but they risk a ticket I suppose. I think on a bike you could easily get in and out in a long day... the rocky sections that really slow down the 4x4's would be a breeze. It would be fun to pack in and spend some time exploring though.

 I was thinking the same thing ( at ~115miles, in and out would be doable on a bike but camping and exploring would be fun). I'm actually thinking of riding all the way down from my house on my bike and doing it, add some roads miles but I think it would make it that much more fun :D

I tired searching advrider.com for some HITR trip reports but couldn't find any. I'll check out bogley

Lets do it Caleb!! :)

There are spots that will challenge bikes, mostly steep climbs, ledges, sandy washes, etc. I'm sure it would be a great trip for motorcycles. I think my piggy DR650 would be ridden at it's limits in a few places.

I'm already starting to lay out my route in Google Maps :D unfortunately I don't think it will be until spring that I'd be able to get away (during 4th quarter at work we're not allowed to take any vacation :(). If you want to do it sometime after the first of the year (probably early spring so it can warm up just a bit) let me know, I'm game :)

I've split this off in to a new thread so we don't take away from the other HITR trip.

For those that are interested in joining, lets suggest some dates that would work.

Wish I had a bike to do this on.. you may even be able to take the old route and make it past the washout on the bikes... Depending on when you go I may be able to come down as a support/ gear vehicle.. not taking my daughter down this time would make it so much more fun..(wouldn't get pissed and leave)

When I drove it this Spring, I was looking at the trail the whole time thinking that it would be great on a bike. The first 1/3 of the trail is pretty easy going, so we ought to be able to cover lots of ground easily. After that it gets technical and there will be places that will be slow going and somewhat difficult with a bike loaded up with camping gear. I think bikes could easily get to the end of the trail in a day.

I like the idea of riding to the trailhead, I could meet you in Green River the day you leave. We could ride to Lake Powell and camp for the night, take the ferry across and get fuel that next morning, then hit the trail.

When we did the trail at the beginning of April, we got snowed on. It was warm during the first day, then a storm moved in. I'd suggest mid to end of April for best timing. I'm not against camping in winter-ish weather, but since we'd be on motorcycles we'd have the minimal camping supplies. Timing would be important to be comfortable.

This came the day we left the trail-

Last time down (August) Most of that sand shelf that was still clinging to the side there last year had fallen in to the void - except for the small patch held together by a tree right at the base of the way out, wich is now an island surrounded by steep slickrock on both sides. - if you set up a jump to get on to that island..... maybe :D

Well that just sucks.. But I would be willing to video tape anyone who decided to try that Jump :)

My thoughts as well. I go truck camping all winter long but winter gear might get a bit heavy on the bike. :) Warmer weather=more fun.

I agree too. This is the kind of info I was looking for. I want to do it early enough that it's not 100+ all night long, but I don't care to be camping with the snow if I can avoid it. :)

Greg, I like the idea of meeting up in Green River. I plan to come down by way of Highway 50 instead of taking the long, boring Highway 6 through Price.

We've done this trail a few times on bikes - always in and out in the same day. We didn't stop and smell the roses much....

If it hits 100 at all that is likely too much for me! ;) Let alone at night! :) 70s during the day with 40s-50s at night is great for me. I could probably even stand a bit warmer during the day to get a bump to the overnight lows as I plan to leave the tent at home. However, I wouldn't suffer into the low 40s.
