Sprinkler Valves??????

Ayone know anything about sprinkler valves? I'm trying to figure out my yard which was basically roughed in and never finished by a landscaping company that no longer exists. I got the stop an waste installed downstairs, and put full pressure to it yesterday, (2 broken main lines, fixed at 10:00 pm last night) and I've been trying to manually turn on all of the valves to see what each of them controlls. Only 3 out of 8 seem to be working properly. They don't seem to have a manual switch to turn them on and off, you just turn unscrew the valve cap a quarter turn turn it on. Is it vacuum controlled? Do i need to get power to them to see if they will work right or do I have 5 bad valves? 2 or 3 of them just come on as soon as the main water valve is open, and a couple of them don't seem to do anything at all. Anyone who knows anything about these things, any help would be appreciated. Please respond by PM or text message to 801-541-2538, as I'm heading outside now for the rest of the day. Anyone near Herriman my address is 14394 Logan Falls Ln. (5435 W.) if you happen to be close by. Or if you want free beer, come over and throw some sod with us. (doesn't that sound fun?) Thanks in advance for any advice. Jack

I've done my share... :ugh:

One question I have is did they run the wires for the valves?
Sample valve pictures...

(mine have a little lever on the output side so I don't have to twist the solenoid to turn on the valve.)

On the timer you ought to have something that looks like this:

notice the common (all the way on the left on mine) all valves should have one wire that connects to it. the other wire on the valve will go to one of the individual stations.

If you were messing around and just wanted to test the valve I've heard you can take 2 9V batteries and power the valve manually I believe you just have to supply over 12V (so yes a car battery would work). I doubt the valves are bad unless the installer really did something wrong.

PM is on the way.

My bro and I work on them all the time. You probably have dirt in a few of them if the mains were broken. This will cause them to leak and not shut off properly. I'll PM you his number if you want us to come look at them.

Thanks you guys for posting up, you hit it right on the nose. The lines got rocks in them and it was sticking the valves open. We pulled the tops of the valves one by one and flused them, then put them back together and they started working. Thanks again for the help.
