I moved to Layton 2 months ago and haven't been able to find a steel yard either. I'm also looking for a place to buy welding gas and supplies. Anyone?

I would say try calling a pro welder and asking them. There are tons of welders in the world, look one up and ask what they do. Perhaps they would even be willing to sell you some of their stock.

In Ogden there is Bowman and Kemp for steel.
There is also Praxair, Airgas ans Ogden Welders supply (US Gas?).

B&K usually has cut-off pieces they will sell for a lessr cost if you are not interested in buying an entire piece. They will also cut you special sizes.

No, they are on the "old highway" around 24th street near the Ogden Industrial Park. The old highway is 1900S in Roy and runs from No. Ogden to Layton. Some landmarks are Wheeler CAT (machinery), Chevron, The Tool Box  , and a big corn field. There is a small import shop right across the street where an FJ40 usually sits and I believe Moore's resturant is there also.

I don't know of any either out this way so I get my steel in SLC at Metal Supermarkets.
Yikes, really? I can't afford to go anywhere near that place. I just picked up 72 feet of rectangle tube this morning. Metal Supermarkets was almost double the price of Metalmart, in Lehi. For the record, Metalmart was significantly cheaper than Wasatch steel, too. Enough of a difference to make me drive down to Lehi to get it. I paid a little less for 3 24 foot lengths AND TAX, at Metalmart, as I would have for 3 20 foot lengths BEFORE TAX at Wasatch. just FYI. ;)

Both places seem to vary back and forth depending on what metal you are buying. When I am about to purchase a large amount of steel, I always call both places and check prices.

I've heard that as well but for the amount of steel I use (in the three years I've been going there, I still haven't bought 1/5th the amount of steel that you just bought :) ), that is as far south as I want to go.

Wow, I didn't even think about bowman when I was over the other day. I should have mentioned that to you..I went there just to get some small random pieces I needed to weld on before moab, and I think I got a 4x3'x1/4" piece of flatbar, and a 2' piece of 1.5" od stuf for like 4 bucks or somthing. They have a crapload of random scraps, and they keep it clean, unlike metalmarts scraps, theirs are left outside and rusty!
