Steering--How are heims for the street?

I know technically they are not legal, but how do they hold up, and why exactly are they not legal? I will be putting a 60 under my Jeep with in the next couple weeks and acquired a summit machine tie rod and drag link with a steering box i purchased. I would just run tie rod ends in the tie rod, but the threads are different. Just looking for some input. I'm not opposed to running either or. I know tie rod ends will work well, especially one ton ends.

I run a heim tierod on my YJ. The heims are 3/4" and they lasted about 3 or 4 years.
Without a boot to keep out dust or grease to prevent wear I wouldn't expect them to last vey long.

Is that on the street? 3 or 4 years is pretty good to me. I have replaced the stock tie rod ends on my TJ a few times in the 5 years I have had it.

I ran heims on my Bronco for a little over a year with issues and that is with 37" tires.
I still have the tie rod and drag link and they are still in great shape.
They are 3/4" and I will be upgrading to 7/8" when I get to that point in my build.

Make sure your bolts are tight so the heims won't wallow out and you should be good to go.

I run Heims all around...I have ran 75-80 on the interstate & was perfectly fine! I don't normally do this, but had a friend break & had no other choice. My wife drives it around town from time to time & all are still tight

I would run 7/8 heims since the price difference is very very miniscule and never worry about them
