Yeah, its a bigger gap than I would like. I may just fill it with caulking or silicone. I'm open to ideas.

If you're just gonna fill it with caulk or silicone, what would it hurt to put a piece of fill-steel in there and just weld it?

Yeah. I was going to drill the spring pads back an inch too but its not worth it. Its too big to put on my drill press and I don't have a hand drill big enough. Plus an inch isn't worth all that trouble unless it gives me a zero degree approach. Even then its probably not worth what it would take to get the steering that far forward.

I'm happy with my axle placement.

Thanks for coming out Josh and James, it was nice to have company. It gets discouraging wrenching on this every night with seemingly no progress. It was good to talk to people who have been there. You guys rock, feel free to stop by anytime.

I finally got the six shooters adjusted with the right preload. My lower trunion bearing was a lot tighter on the lower cap than on my original knuckles, which is weird since it's the same cap. Regardless, it went on with some "persuasion", and the knuckles are all shimmed up perfect to 13-14 lbs. Working on the knuckles isn't hard, but it is time-consuming. I must have pulled that steering arm 6 times per side till I got it just right. Note to those installing 6-shooters: only install 4 of the 6 nuts/cone washers when checking preload, it saves a LOT of time when you have to pull it off again. I'm glad I now understand the mystery of Toyota knuckles. I was always unsure of what they were, how they worked, and what they did. Now I know.
***side note for those who are curious: i put one thick shim on the bottom trunion cap, then it took a medium and a thin shim on the top one. I'll post up if this setup gives me any problems. My stock knuckle had a thick and one thin on the bottom cap. I'm hoping this is somewhat close to centered on the axle. The last thing I want is a front seal leak after all this. I'm sure if I'm off even by a little, the Marlin Ecoseal will help things stay where they're supposed to.

Now I have to grind out the inside of my ball ends to clearance my dirty 30's (I assume, haven't put them in yet), then the front axle will finally go all together. I've never done this before. It can't be much harder than anything else I've done so far. I sure hope my housing isn't bent and that my knuckles are somewhat close to centered.

My wife is going to see twilight tonight with some other Edward/Jacob Junkies, so I'm free. Will you be wrenching??

I will be wrenching, but it won't be till 9 (I have guitar lessons from 5-9). I'd love some company at 9 though. I'll be grinding the balls and putting the dirty 30's in, and hopefully finishing the front axle so I can get it off jackstands for some motivation. If you couldn't tell from the pics, my garage is an absolute disaster, so consider yourself warned.

haha, I just sold the truck that's been sitting in one half on my garage for 2 years, and finally pulled out my 'runner that's been sitting there for 2 years, and now my garage is the one needing the overhaul! It's a mess, too!!

I'll see if I can make it around nine. Would you text me your address??

Sweet. Hope you can make it. I texted you my address. 86, you can come wrench on your crap at my place, assuming it's drivable and doesn't sit in my driveway overnight :)

I probably ground a little too much, but that's better than too little.

And the top. It's hard to do the top because you can't see what you're doing (unless you have a lift).

haha, that would be kinda fun! Have you been working on it at all?

Well the alternator wasn't working right but I just got it all back together and it seems to be working now. The wiring was funky. It also seems to be getting really hot but the temp gauge stays normal. I'm gonna flush the radiator tomorrow and see if that helps. Anyway sorry for the little thread jack. Hope you got some stuff done on your truck.
