Stinger or no stinger?

Well I am almost done with my latest project of making some tube fenders, (see pics) and I am starting to plan my next job of a front bumper. I find myself wondering should I have a stinger or not. I think they look cool but do I really need one? Any thoughts?

If by "cool" you mean so God awfully stupid looking and useless that it actually sends chills down your spine, then yes, I suppose they are "cool". Those chills could actually be a direct result of having to watch kittens kill themselves every time they look at it, but it's hard to say. ;)

Actually, what would be "cool" is if you could incorporate a hinge onto said stinger that would allow you to pivot a spare tire down from it's awesome looking location on the roof. You could add support to the mechanism off of the chrome nerf bars and use the rear stinger that previously held your spare tire to hold something else useful, like empty gas cans or a highlift, for when you are parked at the movie theater and run out of gas while stuck.

Your tube fenders look pretty nice BTW. Nice work.

if you do a back flip it can help protect your hood and motor.. but i guess thats not cool.. kind of a dumb idea.. i think small stingers done right look good

Then technically it's not really a stinger right? I have a small grill guard up front that I don't think looks bad at all, I personally like it, but I don't think it falls into the stinger category.

If you want to do something like Zuki said to protect the engine, then I'd suggest something like what I've got, maybe a couple inches taller, but don't do a stinger that's 3'-4' high.

There are far less obnoxious ways to build a bumper to protect your engine bay in the event of a hard roll. You aren't 'required' to make it look stupid.

I think stingers are more cosmetic than utilitarian.

Some people like them, some people despise them and others don't really care either way.

Fenders look good Spence. I say no to the stinger. You could call me and I'd tell you why, or you could just read Cody's first post and get the gist of my reasoning. ;)

I do recommend engine bay protection in the event of a nasty roll. Most people just think of body damage from a roll, but there's no need to ruin an engine too.

Just do the normal grill hoop that all the jeeps are running now it protects the radiator and engine in the even of a rollover

Well, the idea isn't to protect the engine (I've never heard of someone ruining an engine from a rollover, other than running it while upside down). The idea is to protect the radiator, since if that gets trashed, it's going to be a long trip off the trail.

Hey, you're the one who went bear hunting in northern Alberta. I figured you wanted to get even further north the next time around.

It was May and you can see all the snow on the ground...
How did we go from my kitten killing awful bumper design to the freeze points of Mexicans:D
