Mine's "legal" but that depends on the tire pressure. :D

I didn't think about yours. So frame height is your issue? Linked or leafs? And what's your WMS to WMS length?

Thanks.

Leafs, stock XJ. WMS is whatever a stock GM setup is. 69.5" on the front 60 and 65 or 67 or whatever in the rear 14 bolt. I'm using 6" Xenon TJ flares. Part of the flatfender thing was to make it street legal, so the fenders are flared out a little more than I really wanted, but they were made for tire coverage with the flares on. I have the materials to do the same kind of thing on the rear, but haven't done it yet. To get it to pass, I've just added material to the flares for coverage. Mud flaps, horn, wipers, etc.

With 37" tires I was fine with the frame height. Was about 23. 5" to the frame. The MTR 40" tires are BIG (true to size). I might tinker with that pile this afternoon. I could see where the frame is right now.

My WMS will be 65 front and rear, but 5 on 5.5. I'm worried about finding a wheel with the back space I need so I can get the tires covered.

My jeep will be street legal and on 40's when it's all done.. and the frame height law for utah is 24" from the bottom of the frame measured underneath the driver's side door for vehicles under i think 7,000 lbs GVW... and 26" for like 7k-10k lbs, and 28" i think for vehicles over 10k lbs GVW iirc... my jeep is registered under the 7k lbs so that's the one I have memorized at 24". but I'm not 100% sure about the heavier vehicles.. and also, vehicle width is limited to 8' maximum from outside of tire to outside of tire.

no his isnt legal anymore with the full hydro and all

I'm pretty sure technically, you can be street-legal with full hydro steering if your pump is the style that has a "return to center" feature. My brother went through a lot of research and stuff on this, he was going to keep his FJ-40 legal when he built it up, and so he got that return to center pump, but with full-width dually axles he decided he didn't want super-wide fender flares in order to cover his tires, so he never registered it as street-legal.

Lift law fwiw:

41-6a-1631. Prohibitions.
(1) A person may not operate on a highway a motor vehicle that is mechanically altered or changed:
(a) in any way that may under normal operation:
(i) cause the motor vehicle body or chassis to come in contact with the roadway;
(ii) expose the fuel tank to damage from collision; or
(iii) cause the wheels to come in contact with the body;
(b) in any manner that may impair the safe operation of the vehicle;
(c) so that any part of the vehicle other than tires, rims, and mudguards are less than three inches above the ground;
(d) to a frame height of more than 24 inches for a motor vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating of less than 4,500 pounds;
(e) to a frame height of more than 26 inches for a motor vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating of at least 4,500 pounds and less than 7,500 pounds;
(f) to a frame height of more than 28 inches for a motor vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating of at least 7,500 pounds;
(g) by stacking or attaching vehicle frames (one from on top of or beneath another frame); or
(h) so that the lowest portion of the body floor is raised more than three inches above the top of the frame.
(2) If the wheel track is increased beyond the O.E.M. specification, the top 50% of the tires shall be covered by the original fenders, by rubber, or other flexible fender extenders under any loading condition.

I don't know that there is an actual law about hyrdo steering, without some more research I'm under the impression its a 'beadlock' type deal. Illegal at inspection...

In my mind "street legal" is being able to have the "experts" at Jiffy Lube throw the book at it and have it pass :p

This is as close as I have ever come to the original question. Hilux on 37's. I purposely took it to one of the stricter places in town and it passed. I don't have the front flares on in this pic. Fwiw I'm pretty sure I could get away with 40's on this truck, but it would be very close on the lower frame rail measurement.

OK, I lied. I'm at 25.25" with 12 psi in the tires. I think I'd have to go to 8 psi to be under 25". I would have to french my spring hangers in the frame to be legal (and that could happen, but I'm not sure---I'm kind of sick of working on it---haven't touched it since Jeep Safari)

I'll be using YJ frame, but it wont matter because it will be linked. I'll be able to dial in the frame height just where I need it.
