Super 35 Kit

Is there much difference between the different brands of Super 35 Kits that are out there? Genuine Gear, Yukon, Superior, etc. I know I've heard and read several places that Genuine has crappy R&P's, but what about their Super 35 kit, same story?

Not to sound like a jerk but I wasted my money on a super 35 once..... They are a nice starter setup but one I would bipass. Step up to a stronger non clip type axle... You will be money ahead in the long run. This one I can almost guarentee

I guess that means nobody knows or has experience wether or not the different brands of super 35 kits are of different quality or all pretty much the same.

Although I wasn't asking if polishing the turd was worth the money, or wether I should do it, thanks for the opinions. I think it is a given that a D44 is a much better option, it's just a matter of the super 35 is the best option I have at this time.

If anyone does have some knowledge or experience on the different brands of the super 35 kit that would be awesome to hear about.

Sorry.............I think most of us around here wouldn't know that there are differences IN super 35 kits.............www.jeepsunlimited.com ; www.naxja.org are some places to ask opinions from people that run them.

Seriously, an 8.8 out of an Explorer is twice as strong and real close to the same price (if you have someone else install it) as your super 35 kit. You can probably even get the right gear ratio if you look hard.

i cost is a concern a used 44 goes for around 300-450 and that is about half of a super 35 kit plus it is a way better axle maybee you might listen to some of the people on this board because they once wasted money on a 35 and are trying to spare you from doing the same thing

you can find XJ 44's, or 8.8's for 2-500 depending on condition and options.

The only person I know that has run the super 35 kit destroyed the 4.56 ring gear when his tire grabbed his bumper. It was a ZJ on 35's and I"m not sure what brand the kit was was. He swapped in a 9" after that. Expensive lesson to learn.

LOL..... maybe I'm bad at math but help me out here.

I'm guessing you're looking at Scout 44's or something similar that would have to be rebuilt for the 300-450 price that you mentioned but let me know if there is some 44 out there that is ready to bolt in for that and I"ll be all over it.

So lets add this up real quick....
Housing -300
Brakes - 100
R&P-150
Axle shafts- 300
Detroit Locker - 450
Bearings, seals - 90
Brackets for control arms and shocks - 150

Total Appx ~ 1540

Of course the D44 is the optimal way to go but if you have 800 to spend what do you do...... Leave the turd unpolished or go with the super 35 until you have the money for a 44 or something similar.

So I'm guessing the interest you have in the 35 with the superior super 35 kit in the For Sale Forum isn't for yourself since you can just get a 44 for cheaper.

31 spline 8.8 w/ disks, 4.10s, complete. $400

lock right 250
gears (if needed) 150
brackets (depends on suspension) 10-50 bucks (if it's for a TJ or something similar, find a throwaway TJ housing and hack off the bracketry--cheap and easy)
setup 150?
chrome diff cover. 50

You're obviously more concerned with cost than strength, so go with a lock right instead of a detroit. I'd go spool, but I just like simple and reliable things--I'm weird like that.

If you do the work yourself, you can have an 8.8, w/ 31 spline shafts, disk brakes and whatever else for less than 800. If you have to have someone else do the work, add a couple hundy to that (unless you get buddy/beer-pricing). Even at 1000, it's worth the extra 200-300 bucks to have the better axle. Besides, the super 35 kit gets pretty expensive after you have to swap out bent housings, blown R&P's etc.

I'm in my 31 spline 9" about 400 bucks including gears, spool, rotors/calipers/brackets/brakelines, etc. There are better solutions than a super 35 kit. Not trying to be a dick or argue with you, but I've never spoken with someone who purchased one and was happy about their investment. I'm come from grand cherocar circles, and those sissies will try anything to avoid 'swapping axles'. ;)

What vehicle is this for?

I have a couple friends that run the super 35, and they have not had any problems with them at this point. One guy runs 35's and is heavy on the pedal and the other guy runs 33's. If you pay someone to put it in without gears you will still be into it for 1100 bucks.

What are you needs right now? How big is your lift, are you sprung over or under? Do you have a YJ or a TJ?

One disadvantage of the 8.8 is that you pretty much must run a SYE kit if you do that swap, but then again, you probably should have a SYE if you are doing any hard wheeling (okay I ran with out one for 4 or 5 years).

If you were to go with a non XJ D44, you would run into bolt pattern problems with your front axle....not cool unless you want to swap the front also.

If I were you, I would do the 8.8.

I am into mine about 1100 bucks, I did it all myself (except the ring and pinion) and I am definitely not a mechanic. If you stay sprung under and have a 3 or 4 inch lift you don't even need to mess with the spring perches...they fit! It has disc brakes, it is twice as strong as the 35 and most importantly you stay with the same bolt pattern.

He!! I will even help you do the swap.

So, answer these questions:

1. What type of Jeep do you have?
2. How high are you lifted?
3. Do you have a SYE?
4. What is your budget?
5. Would you like disc brakes?
6. Do you want to do it right the first time?
7. Have you ever seen a D35 bend the tubes or break and axle or ring and pinion?
8. Have you ever seen a 44 break?
9. What is your favorite color?
10. Are you going to vote for the warmonger bush or the liberal freak Kerry?

Eric

On a side note I put 4.88's and a lockrite into my D35, broke the lockrite and then put a detroit in it. Never broke a shaft but upgraded out of peer pressure. Now all I think about when I am on the trails is when my puny 260 u-joints are going to snap in my D30 (even though I carry spares).

Bottom line: it never ends so it really doesn't matter what you do.
