Super sprint, sprint, and olympic triathlons?

I rode a mtn bike with street tires on it for years and then switched to a ghetto Bianchi road bike. i felt like there was quite a difference. I picked mine up for $200. If you're only riding these types of super sprints then just stick with a mtn bike and street tires. If you're interested in a quick beginner Sprint type triathlon, try the American fork splash and dash on 10-4. I am doing that one, its my first one as well. I am decent on a bike and running. However, I have no experience swimming laps in a pool. Hopefully 300m wont be too bad. Six lengths of the indoor pool shouldnt be too bad.

I was actually looking at that one and had the same thought. 6 laps can't be that much right? Maybe I'll borrow a bike and come try it out.

you don't have to wear a speedo do you?

We should make a RME triathalon, sounds like we would have enough people. At least get a group together to train and compete with.
Maybe greg would get us some jersey's....

I think the Xterra offroad tri might be more appealing to this community! 1500 M swim, 18.6 mile mountain bike, 6.2 mile trail run :D

maybe next year on the xterra tri. I don't think I could handle the swim or bike portions given the amount of time I've had in the pool and on a bike in the last couple years.

I think I'm going to try that super-sprint. I guess I better start swimming a little and jump on a bike for a few minutes lol.

maybe next year on the xterra tri.

The xterra tri is in September in Ogden, anyone planning on it? there are also a few in Colorado. If I do enter, I definitely won't be competitive, I'll just be doing it for fun.

I began training again this morning after a 4 month hiatus :ugh:

I'm hoping to do a super sprint in draper on June 20th....need to find time to swim and ride a bike.

The big problem with that one is that it starts at 7:00 a.m. on a Saturday. I'd rather run an iron man tri than get up that early on a saturday.

Good luck to you!

I'd say get a good road bike if you can. Maybe PM JDub and see if he can get you some sponsor flow on a bike for this race. :D Road bikes' big advantage over mtb's w/road tires is rolling resistance-- skinny tires roll superfast compared to even 1" mtb road tires.

I did a weird biathlon once, 5k cross country run to a 25mi cross-country mtb race (no water for a swim nearby LOL ). The transition was pretty easy, just swap shoes and throw a helmet on. No idea on going from teh water to shoes, good luck.

I'd recommend your local community pool. Here in Tooele we've got a decent indoor pool that's fairly open at night. I need to swim more. :(

While I was at school I had a pretty good regimine for training for a triathalon. Since I am off for the summer I have gotten a little lax, but this past week have begun training again. There is a beginner sprint triathalon this weekend here in Bountiful
Sprint - 400yd swim, 12m bike, 5K run
Novice - 150yd swim, 3m bike, 1m run
Of course the packet pickup is from 6:30-7:00...
A few good websites with information are beginnertriathlete.com and triutah.com, you can sign up on triutah.com and they will email you the schedule of upcoming events as well as free classes that are constantly going on.

Road bikes are a world of a difference than mountain bikes on pavement, as has been said if you are looking into this as a personal goal or a casual thing just throw road tires on a light hardtail. But if you are into it anymore than that look on ksl for a good deal. Buy a clunker road bike and figure out what you like, you can always upgrade later. The biggest difference between a triathalon and a running event is simply the transitions. Your muscles need to be trained to adapt to the difference exercises. Instead of running on Monday, biking on tuesday, swimming on wednesday then repeating. Your muscles need to be trained to transition, run a few miles on monday when you get done running hop on your bike and ride a few miles. After swimming hop on a bike and ride home. An easy way to stay motivated is join one of the classes or find a club.

Pearl Izumi makes a tri shoe that is designed to be worn without socks. That helps in the water to bike tranny. I like the vents in the bottom for draining and cooling purposes. You also can clip the shoes to the pedals before the race, when you get out of the water just grab your helmet and start riding, slip them on and do the velcro straps while riding to save time. Drag suit, More of a boxer brief and arguably less resistance than hairy upper legs. Tri stores have swimming shorts that have a pad that double as riding shorts too.

X2 on Chris Holley and his wife being crazy riders!
