...I compare manmade course rockcrawling to....umm to put it bluntly....MASTURBATION. You still get the same net effect without having as much fun.

That is the funniest thing you have said for a while ;) (and the only thing too, welcome back stranger)

I have had limited discussion with Mark on the design of the course. It is not just going to be boulders. They plan to use concrete and a variety of other things I bet.

They really need cheap or free fill dirt in the SLC area. Please contact Mark Patey if you know of any.

To all the haters - I like wheeling in mother nature, that is why I started doing it. This sport is evolving and I look at this as another oportunity and not a replacement. I imagine if this is successful, a couple events a year will be held here, not every one. You guys should be thankfull, the spotlight is shining in your backyard.

Kurt - I hear your concerns about every high school kid in his mom's SUV. It is my opinion that by taking it to the track we are forming more seperation between the average trailblazing redneck and a sport called rockcrawling. I think they will not see it as something they can emulate because it is to far seperated. Make sense? It is arguable.

It could also give an opportunity to educate more of the mass's about land use, the sport, conservation, proper techniques etc....I see an opportunity for a booth KURT....I'll even pay my U4WDA dues and come help.... :D

As I have said, I have real mixxed feelings, and some bad ones....But I think this is the way the comp have to go, so we might as well embrace it, and try to make it a good thing....Fighting will not help anyone....

I am as surprised as anyone that I am saying that....given my dis-taste for UROC in general....

So will the courses only be available to UROC competitors, or on off weekends can we 'pay to play'?

Looks like all stadium seating right? I can't foresee the RMR allowing spectators anywhere near a vehicle for safety reasons. Better bring your binoculars if you want to see anything. The future of rock crawling looks like it will be an arena event monster truck style. Soon to come will be artificial obstacles, large square cement blocks to drive over.

I was hopeing that I would never have to hear that word again, and then there it is twice in one day.

This word reminds me of the stupid preppy-g's that where their polo shirts with their collar up so they feel hip and urban.

needless to say--the word 'fay' is gay.

Real mixxed feelings here too!

I guess the more I think about it, the more I support the idea of "stadium" style events on private property... But I fear the reprecussions that come from making this a "mass" audience sport.

Historically, I would dare say 95% of those attending rock crawling competition, have had some degree of exposure to the sport, wether it be freinds, family, or themselves.

Now, the main comsumer, is going to be the typical "family" that attends motorsport activites... Is this a good move for the sport? Time will only tell?

I think from a land-use perspective, this move is ideal... meaning, the potential damage that can be caused by a rockcrawl... may soon bu used against us by the WAG groups. Take note, they are against major OHV activities on private and public land (such as the BLM land in Cedar City, and the private land in Moab). But I hardly see them being concerned over an event at RMR...

I talked to Mike Baer a couple of months ago about what we're going to do here in Colorado Springs. We're going to shape the rocks/climbs out of dirt and then spray it with gunnite like you do a swimming pool. 5000psi concrete think of the traction. We made all the fake rocks at Sea World and Disney like that.

I'm intrested to see how it turns out... I think it could go either way. The crowd control aspect is very good, but Spence made a very good (& graphic... ) point on the other hand.

I haven't been to RMR since just after HS...

So where exactly does a person practice "Competitive Rockcrawling" while still adhering to "Tread Lightly" guidelines?

What are you talking about? Did you derive that from something I posted? Who said that I have ever once praticed? Are you suggesting that because I compete I am not one of the "good guys" and that I am hurting our sport?

Your comment is insulting and I take offense to it. If you want to have a discussion of the impacts of competitive rockcrawling on the land use front then lets do it. If you want to hand out snide comments implying that I (and other competitors) trash the land then to hell with you.

Kurt - I guess U4WDA better take a stance on competitive rockcrawling. Are you going to work with the sport or not? You can take advantage of it to get the word out and make sure there are areas designated for this type of activity.

I have been 4 wheeling for 20 years and competing for 2. I am a backwoods traveler before I am a competitor. I have been active in the effort to keep access to our public land, keep it maintained, keep it clean, and make sure that I influence people on the trail to do the same. I am a member of U4WDA, Blue Ribbon Coalition, and USA-ALL. If I am reading into your "question" correctly you are saying that I need not be a member of U4WDA next year.

I don't think he was being insulting at all, he was just wondering if rockcrawling courses were going to be developed at private venues, were competitors going to be allowed to practice at the venue. Every sport has to allow competitors to practice, or the skill level can't improve. There's very few areas in the real world that can duplicate the type of obstacles required for competitive rockcrawling.

Okay now......take a breath.

I think what he meant was, RC Comps are NOT treading lightly. (Because they simply are not.) Look at the venues.....Routes up rock faces every which way....fans stomping all over the place, leaving trash, drivers running into vegetation, excess wheelspin, and etc.

HOWEVER

Remember that the comps are NOT held in sensitive areas. They are held in approved areas, and are cleaned up afterward. It's not like they are held in a National Park or something, right? Let's face it, that type of driving doesn't typify a Tread Lightly mantra. A great deal of caution needs to be used and the public needs to be educated that these events are NOT typical of the trail rides that you and I enjoy every other weekend throughout the state.

Does the average person equate comps with EJS with every 4x4 enthusiast in the state?

Is this a fair observation? I think so.
