Suspension Question

Well it looks like I will be setting the front of the Cruiser with a four link. My questions is, as some of you know the Cruiser is big, and now sports a 454. I don't think air shocks will cut it. I need some help with coil overs. How do I choose what coil over will work and what springs to use? I'm thinking 16" coils over will do the trick.

Thoughts?

Cant help ya on the spring rates. I'm guessing you'll have to mock it up, and weigh the front half to give the dealer some info. But, my question is, why wont air work? Hell, every semi is running on air, and a hell of a lot cheaper to adjust.

well, for what I have read, the cruiser will be too heavy for air shocks.

Look into the 2.5 Fox Air Shox. They are twice the size of the 2.0 series and from what I'm told are made to handle the extra weight.

I can't seem to find what weight they will carry...

an "Air Shock" does not use air in any way shape or form.it uses nitrogen along with a certain type of oil to adjust the difference in compression and rebound rates.the ammount of pressure you put into the tube will also adjust how they handle as well as how they will act.

i myself wouldn't put it on airshocks i just don't like how they handle.the 2.5 will easiely handle they cruiser.

I too would look into the 2.5s or even the sway-away shocks...they have a bigger shaft than the Fox 2.0s so are supposed to hold more weight. I loved my air shocks, they were absolutely silent and the ride was like you were on a cushion :greg:

I have been reading and have not been reading good things about the air shocks. The only bad thing I have read on the Coil Overs is price.

well the only thing you really have to look at as far as airshocks is getting a nice long travel sway bar like an Anti-Rock to help get rid of the body lean.i went with coilovers all the same

thats not entirely true either, I had no swaybars (front or rear) and I didn't have excessive body lean or roll...mine would always straighten right out.

I'm curious to know what bad stuff you have been reading about the air shocks? I'll never say they are better than a coilover (and anyone that does is crazy) but for the price of one coilover with hardware and springs you can almost buy all four air shocks. When you're crawling you wont notice a difference, the biggest difference is only going to be with high speeds through whoops and such because the air shocks dont have an external reservoir (and its not an option at all).

Same with my buggy. Agreed.

Air shox are not just a bolt on suspension, they require lots of fine tuning if you want to get your ride and handling just how you want it. A lot of the people complaining about air shox seem to have not messed with them very much after the initial install. Just an observation. :)

you are also talking about a tube buggie and a full size cruiser with a 454 up front.to get the kind of response he will want they will have to be tuned soft it being tuned soft with the weight it will need a swaybar.you can't compare your tube buggie and how it handled to how a full bodied truck would handle with the same set up.i can't say that going coilover is going to help body lean any more then the airs.i just like the fact that i have a spring to support my truck and not a shock that could take a dump on you.

Ahem... I'm looking at a pair of 16" 2.5's right now. They've been kickin' around a bit with no suitable rig to use them on, so a good deal could be found in these I'm thinking. :)
