Switch to google fiber?

I know google fiber has been discussed in here several times, but I couldn’t find anything current. How are we feeling about them these days?

I currently use Comcast and have their “Superfast 800Mbps” internet speed along with their xFi gateway. We average around 1.2T of data use every month if that matters? I’m really happy with our internet, but It seems like Comcast pricing is always climbing.

Reliability is by far the most important factor to me. My wife works from home so I can’t have spotty service. Speed is obviously important as well, are googles claims holding up to reality?

Here are a few speed tests I ran today from different sites to show what I’ve currently got.

Here are the tech specs on what google offers:

I wouldn't, just because it's Google. F*** those guys.

I switched from Comcast to Quantum Fiber a little bit ago. Nice and fast, it's been much more reliable than Comcast was.

We switched. It might be a little bit faster. I know the speeds say it’s 10 times faster, but maybe our equipment was maxed out on its own ability already? We didn’t really notice much of a speed change.

But we do have outages all the freaking time. I bet at least weekly we have to deal with lags and complete outage.

Your having outages in google? That’s what I was worried about. That’s absolutely a non negotiable for me

I switched from Comcast to Google fiber a couple years ago. It’s been completely fine. There’s been a couple outages over the last couple years, but I think that’s pretty normal with any provider. It seems pretty solid for the most part. I only have the one gig service because I don’t need anything more, but it’s definitely a better value than I was paying with Comcast.

I also work from home and like I said I never notice outages. The couple times I did. It was infrastructure related seemed like they had it fixed within 20-30 minutes.

I said outage.. but it’s really connection issues. The fiber is there, but we cannot get the data through. Or something like that. You know I don’t actually know what I’m talking about.

I switched from Comcast awhile ago. No complaints. Much faster. Orders of magnitude more reliable. I just ran one speed test just now.

That's basically pegging my NIC. I ought to try a 2GB NIC one of these days.

I might add... There have been outages. But few. And most lasting only minutes. Not too long after I switched, about two years ago, there was an outage that lasted a whole day. Like 20 hours. They gave me that month free, without asking. Comcast went out for hours at a time semi regularly and day long outages happened more than once. They never even prorated my bill for that.

I’ve only had 1 outage for a few minutes in the time we’ve had it which is probably a little over a year. I did it because I was sick of Comcast’s price climbing like you said. Having to sign a contract to get a lower price just pissed me off. Speed and connectivity wise I don’t really notice a difference from Comcast. Comcast has better data in their app, the Google app is kind of trash- just like the rest of their apps IMO.

If you decide to get it, sign up for the 2GB plan to get the better router and (2) extenders. Then downgrade in the app to 1GB and keep that stuff. My neighbor’s installer told him that strategy so a few of us have done it.

EDIT: the wife and I WFH so we’re on it constantly.

I'm using Verizon 5g at home for $40/ month, it's fine. Never had any outages, but I don't think I get the best reception. It's supposed to be 1gb, but we get about 100-150mbps down and 20 up. I'm told that's enough for about 20 simultaneous HD videos to be playing. I can "double" the speed for another $20 per month, but I don't think that impacts reception much.

My xfiniti at the brewery goes down all the time. Sometimes for days (construction crews digging up lines downtown I think).

I had Google fiber at home before and it never had outages. In an effort to download games faster on the Xbox we upgraded to 2gb, but it didn't change anything. I don't think I'd do that again.

Sounds like mostly positive feedback 👍

I don’t really understand the tech specs for all of these plans. If I’m happy with the speeds I currently have, which plan puts in a similar place?

I think they just offer the 1gb and 2gb service. The 1gb has been plenty to have two kids online gaming and streaming on computers while I work and do video calls without any issues at all. I get about three emails a week trying to up sell me to 2gb for like $30 more a month I think but I just don’t see the need. We are all wireless and even with nice WiFi cards in our PC’s I don’t get more then 300-400 megs. If I hard wire the connection to my pc I do get the full gig. But like @Cody said work and video calls don’t take much at all. 10meg is plenty for that to be honest.

Even the GF techs will tell you it’s hard to justify 2GB. Most devices don’t even have the capability to utilize it. I just signed up for it to get the better/extra hardware and then downgraded immediately. Easy peasy

Switched to google fiber recently, 1 gig.

We have a problem with our living room TV randomly losing internet connection, but I suspect it’s a hardware issue, no issues on phones, computer, or other TV we have, plus after a few seconds it always connects back.

I switched because Xfinity was charging us for using more than our allotted data. Not sure how exactly, but we were using almost 1,000 gb/month of data.

Would definitely make the switch again in a heartbeat.

See this is why I say I don’t understand the technical specifications. Google offers a 1,2,5, and 8 gig package. If the 1gig is plenty then who needs the other service?

Either way I’m happy to hear that a simple 1gig plan will do the trick and lower my bill substantially.

When they do the install they have to run a new connection into the house right? How does that work with a finished basement?

How have the installs gone for you guys?
Our guy was great. They installed it in our living room, where the Xfinity stuff was previously stubbed in to. Just a little white box on the wall.
