Switch to google fiber?

They wanted to punch in through our living room wall because that was the closest spot. Not a chance I was going to have that.
The comcast stuff came through the back of the house, and I maybe could have talked them into that If I wanted it there.
We went in through to the basement, and ran it to our utility room. But, unfinished basement.

Im really happy with Google. Has never gone down in the years I have had it.

Instalation for me wasn't great. They ran the main into the opposite side of the house from where every other utility enters. I was not consulted on this and I don't think you get to choose where they put it. I made my own plan how to get it to the room I wanted through the attic. When the guy showed up he was way to big to be in the attic and obviously new to running cable so I pulled cable while he fed it from out side. I guess that was ok it wasn't an easy job and he was ok with the time it took. I had planned ahead and had the fish tape in place in the wall.

Depends on where they put it in at the street and where your xfinity goes in-and if that’s still accessible. Mine was under way too much concrete for me to allow them to go that way. I had them dig through the other side of my yard and put it through the wall under our fireplace because that’s where the great room TV is. The xfinity came in the other side of the house but went to the basement utility room and from there split to the great room TV and the office. So I just used the Ethernet at the great room tv to connect the others. Easy peasy.

They put a little box outside where the service stubs up from the ground and then run a tiny wire through the wall and have a tiny box inside and a modem/router combo. It’s not bad. Just put in the notes on your order that you want to talk to them otherwise the contractors they use may just start digging. This is common from what I’ve seen. They also show up to dig days before the appointment you set. That appointment is the actual final install in my experience. It’s weird

In my neighborhood they just put a hole and buried a box in everyone's park strip long before the service was even offered. no one had a choice. they probably chose the opposite side to avoid power gas and cable lines. the digging days before took me by surprise but it didn't matter. to put it where I really wanted would have meant going under the driveway.

No complaints with my install, but I was here for all of it and directed it for the most part, including the digging. But I had them dig along existing utilities and come in with the old Comcast wall penetration. Dig crew and installer both seemed happy to have someone telling them where to go. Probably less complaints for them later and they know it.

My last remaining hesitation is about the installation location. I’ll have to reach out to them with my questions. I really don’t want my router on any of the exterior walls due to the layout of my house.

The mesh extenders can really help with that problem but yeah it’s still not absolutely ideal. It would be cool to have the router on the second floor in the center of the house

If you have access to Utopia, do it. Magnificent. Been running the since I moved into my current place in 2017 and the uptime has been like 97%. I work from home as well and the reliability has been stellar.

Had to pull out a trailer today. So I was where the Google fiber was ran to my house for the first time in a while.

A+ install, for sure 🤦🏼‍♂️

I guess it’s at least 1 inch below dirt level. And it all washed away with the recent rain.
