As long as I am on a roll, let me continue.

We sold HD chain kits for the 4 to 1 after a few T-cases broke. Don't know if John at JB conversions still does it today.

T-cases are rated by Input Torque only.
207 500 lbs max
231 500 lbs max
300 700lbs max
242 800 lbs max
208 800 lbs max
203/205 1200 lbs max
242 HD 1000lbs max
247HD (New Dodge 3500 and Ford F350) 1400 lbs max

If you input more torque than the input torque max rating, the t-case will break.

Max engine torque X by lowest gear in trans (and auto X 2.0 times more) to get max torque and you will know what to use for a t-case. I do not have values for Atlas but the higher the gear ratio (4.1 vs 3.5) the weaker the gear set is and less input torque max.

Same goes for Ring and Pinions in the diffs and axles.
Here are some stock input max ratings for Dana axles.
D 30 3000 lbs max
D 35 3500 lbs max
D 40 4000 lbs max
D 60 6000 lbs max

If your engine = 200 lbs max torque then:
X 3.0 1st gear = 600 lbs
X 2.0 (automatic) = 1200 lbs input torque to t-case.

A stock 231 (2.72 ratio) will break.
A Terra 231 (4.0 ratio) will break sooner!

Output of 231 t-case is 1200 lbs X 2.72 = 3200 lbs

Output of Tera t case is 1200 lbs X 4.0 = 4800 lbs

Dana 40 will break.
Dana 30 and 35 will break sooner!

You need to match your engine, trans, t-case and axle's or things break (by the way, some folks can break anything). If you take it easy on the gas you can make the 231 last, but if you like to bang on it in the rocks you need to upgrade your equipment or use a smaller engine to make it live.

I appreciate that..
I will never claim to know it all......

I would take his advise to you about these setup's and if you decide to use that kit I would recommend at least you allow me to do a special Brandon strength helper to it....It will make it last alot longer..30 bucks
Like he said where they are built now is scary....
Those bearings and such are way easy to replace just get ahold of me and I'll show you.
I can build you one cheap that will be alot stronger and won't fail to normal use (comp stuff would be alittle to much these days)
I ran one in my four cylinder for years and years and never had one problem....BUT and this is a big one.......
I built it..

ATLAS is the sure way .......Never break..

wow thats a lot of info!!!! you should start a magazine of your own and do reviews from the builder point of view... instead of the tester point of view. you see, the testers' paycheck says that what they are testing is a good product. you know what i mean;) ?

i have a 4 cyl (and proud of it) so my case should last a bit longer. how much would an atlas cost for my application, or a klune... and which is better? i am not too hard on the gas normally, but i can be.

i am going to have brandon weld the thing for me on saturday. but where do i get a hd chain for it and how much do they cost? i can take the one i have back to 6 states. maybe i should just sell mine to some sucker cause i have not even used it yet. i could maybe sell the whole t-case complete, but i bet i wouln't make enough to buy an upgrade like and atlas or klune.

I was an idiot for not reading you were running a 2.5L.

The 231 (4:1 Terra) will work well with a few mods. Brandon knows them well and what to do. But here is a few I know:

Needs the HD short shaft Kit (Terra, AA, JB).

Needs a wide chain KIT (JB conversions).

Needs a Double roller main shaft input bearing.

You should also install a 2 low shift kit (JB, Terra).

Use older style shift fork (steel) older style syncro (brass) (?).

Double lip seals in front output and input shaft.

30 bucks for the full weld. Plus plastic's I'm not sure yet till tomorrow.
I have found another shift fork if you would like it it'll be 5 bucks so you don't have to use that badly burned/melted one...
