I normally would just let this one go, but you're throwing out a challenge here, so I gotta post up. First off, I have had many opportunities over the years to buy a Scrambler and deep down I wouldn't want one, whatever thats worth.

If someone can say something bad about one I'd be interested. I know the stock axle are not the strongest but that is fix easily

OK, so I can't mention the crappy axles then? Fair enough. I'll give ya a couple just off the top of my head then...

SR4 tranny: (surplus Ford Pinto trannys bought by AMC in the late '70's and made to bolt up to the GM "Iron Duke" 4cyl. in '81 Scramblers) It was just stupid enough to work, for awhile anyway...

T4 and T5 transmissions: learn to rebuild them, often.

"Iron Duke" 4cyl. motor: little power/big weight

258 6cyl. motor: pre '83 prone to blown head gaskets due to 7/16" head bolts not up to task. Excessive oil leaks due to poor placement of (and not enough) valve cover bolts. Plastic valve cover (WTF?).

Carb: need I say more?

Thats just a few, and I could pick away at any rig in the same way. Scramblers are cool, sure, but they simply are not "the best".

Want me to point out the flaws in Samurais? I don't think Greg can afford the bandwidth I'd be using in that post alone.

BTW, the "Barbie Fun Time Comp. Rig" project has begun...

I would say that the "best" rig for wheeling is a YJ or TJ or CJ, just because the parts are SOOOO abundant(sp) and there are so many around that you can look and see what others have done and you can get ideas about what to do on yours.

As for best "off the lot" rig, I am going to have to say an '03 Rubicon, because you get 4-to-1, 4-wheel discs, the same study suspension that the regular TJ's use, and lockers, and MT/R's.

But they are expensive and you could build something else for cheaper, but if you wanted a brand new rig that is what I would buy.

Rather than "hijack" this thread or venture into an unrelated topic, I'll give ya details of the project in a PM. Fair enough?

Meanwhile, you guys keep hammering out the whole "best rig" thing. I'm sure you'll find a definitive answer sooner or later... :rolleyes:

if you want to wheel hard on a shoestring budget, you can't beat a samurai. For what people pay for a set of 38" swampers, you can have a built to the hilt samurai. buy a 500$ samurai, drop 3000$ on it and you are competing in UROC. drop 2000$ on it and you are hanging with just about anyone. Drop 1000$ on it and you are crawling 90% of trails in moab. ....funny thing is that you can get more gears for a samurai now than any other vehicle on the market. You can get just about as many lockers too.

I drive my YJ to work every day and you can't beat the power and looks. I have run it offroad a time or two and I love how it wheels out of the box with just a small lift and some tires. Again, you pay a lot more money for it. It is the original american offroad vehicle and the parts are there to back it. but no matter what, chicks dig jeeps and laugh at samurais.....oh well...maybe that is why I have both.

Now toyotas are amazing creatures. Their stock drivetrain although seemingly low on power is more than adequate for serious offroading. Their reputation for drivetrain longevity is unmatched anywhere and their aftermarket following is amazing.

so let me sum up...

samurai=bargain basement bad ass....

jeeps=traditional bad ass

toyota=reliable rock solid bad ass....

Chicks dig jeeps, some chicks like toys better, most chicks despise samurais.....

There are as many opinions on which is the perfect vehicle as there are brands. Like it has already been said, there is no one perfect rig for every trail or every person out there. I chose my Scrambler for it's wheelbase, ability to haul lots of gear, and availability of parts. Sure it had the 4 cylinder and the T-4 tranny, but all that went bye-bye when I installed the 350/SM-465 combo.
I would upgrade the drivetrain on whatever I chose to build, be it Jeep or Yota or whatever!:D I guess it is up to the individual's needs & wants when it comes to chosing THEIR perfect rig. Just my .02.

Vonski, all the issues that you brought up soo far are easily fixed and still will not cost an arm and a leg. I swaped out everything that you counted against the Scrambler, and I would agree to everything bad about them, but then I put in a chevy 350, sm465 four speed trans, np205 transfer case and litterally through away the old stuf for about $2000. The ability to change, upgrade, swap and the like is one of the major things I like about the jeep. It is not soo easy to do with others out there

You were not specific enough. You said to point out anything bad about them besides the stock axles. I did.

The reason this whole thread is kinda ridiculous (thanks Britney ;)), is that there are way too many factors in determining one "best" rig. You personally may look at a Scrambler and say "this is capable of being the best rig ever made, once I completely swap in a new drivetrain and suspension". Then, you effortlessly make the modifications and there ya go. Not everyone has the abilty, time, money, etc. to do this. Would you recommend that the non-mechanically inclined average Joe buy a Scrambler? He'd be asking "why did you tell me to buy this pile of crap? It's unreliable, has weak components, and doesn't flex". Some people have to deal with and enjoy things that they are unable to modify. Saying that, are Scramblers still the best?

The post you made should have been about "your" Scrambler being the "perfect rig" in your opinion. Not that everyone should buy a Scrambler and it will without a doubt be the best rig for them too.

It's all in how you build it, thats why there is no "best" and cannot be. Also, to say that it easier and/or cheaper to build a Jeep than ANY other make just isn't true. It was like that at one time maybe, but those days are gone.
