tear it out or clean the carpet?

My interior carpet has become quite nasty the last 10 years and I'm debating on just tearing it out and doing a wire tuck of all the wiring. Old gear oil smell never goes away and gets quite nasty on hotter days, so cleaning it likely wouldn't even help. I could either spray the interior or put down some thin rubber matting after tearing the old stuff out.

Most of the wiring is loomed and tucked into the corners under panels and what not, but there are some spots where it criss crosses. You could rhino line the interior and it would look a lot better, but that would mean tearing all of the seats and interior out to do it right.

is replacing it a ridiculous option? I"m assuming this is in the rig in your avatar? Carpet is nice for insulation-- sound and heat/cold....

I lined the interior of my 4 Runner. It looks good the day you do it, after that, not so much. It's tough stuff, but it never really comes clean again. also, the interior is much colder in the winter months.

I'd clean what you have, and call it good enough. I mean, it's a Jeep after all, you'll need the carpet to keep your feet from falling through the rust holes in a year or two.

Tacoma does make some sound judgments without sarcasm every once in a while. I agree with replacing the carpet. I went the route of removing the carpet and it lasted one year before I put it in again and bought some Husky Liners. The jeep was noisy, especially on the freeway and cold in the winter.

Cleaning it is not much of an option, I had almost a full quart of gear oil leak out all over the rear carpet behind the front seats, so it would take many cleanings to get it out. Plus the carpet has been wet before and has a slight moldy smell to it.

Might be worth a trip to a good detail shop. You might be surprized at what they can do. A good shop can easily get rid of the odor. If they can't get the oil up, a set of Husky liners will hide it well, and be a ton less work than replacing it.

I spilled a bunch of gear oil in the Blazer, I know what you mean! stinky...

The difference in noise and temperature are worth keeping something in there, IMO... and new carpet or detailing is just pricey enough that I'd hit the yards for some new beater carpet.

I could buy some of that roll carpeting at Autozone they sell to replace the factory junk.

Go SHAG baby! You ought to go to a carpet store and see if they have any outdoor remnants for cheap.

My dad spilled a gallon of bar oil in the back of his ZJ. I just took the carpet out and hung it on the fence and sprayed degreaser on it.Then pressure washed it a few times. I was surprised at how clean it came.

I have been running shag in the cargo area the last 4 years after having old smelly gear oil leak out in the back while transporting a diff assembly, tore it out and threw some tan shag back there. The more recent gear oil spillage was new oil that soaked the rear passenger foot area and under the seats.

Get new carpet, like Tacoma said it is a good barrier. Then just get those rubber mats that catch liquid and put it over your carpet.
