TH350 question. Need help quick!

My TH350, on the vehicle I am planning on selling, has begun to leak. Okay, maybe leak is not the proper term, it is gushing!

I do not want to crawl around under it right now, so I am hoping someone can diagnose the problem and tell me I do not need a new housing.

It looks like there is a freeze plug or something of the sort on the driver side above the area of the front of the pan. It pours out of there. I only moved the vehicle to get a car out of the garage, and when I shut it off it began to pour out of that hole.

Help!

is it a cooling line? that can cause a mess in a hurry but I am pretty sure the cooling lines come off the passenger side?

something to look at for, usually an easy fix.

Not the cooling lines. The other side of the tranny. I have called a couple transmission shops, and I cannot believe no one knows what the hell I am talking about.

I know RME knows, H E L P ! ! ! !
(I will try to get a picture up)

I'm not super familiar with the T350, but I've seen a cap blow off that side on a 700 before. Large, maybe 3-4" in diameter. I wonder if the T350 has a similar gadget?

I don't believe so. If that were the case, I would imagine I could find that object in my driveway.

Here is a pic. What the heck is it? Should I just shove some bubble gum in there to plug it up? :greg:

Is that the vent line fitting? Could the tranny be pressurizing and blowing the fluid out the vent for some reason? Are you using a radiator with a built-in tranny cooler? Maybe the radiator (pressurized) is leaking into the tranny cooler section, pressurizing the tranny and blowing fluid out the vent hole?

That's like a shot in the dark around a corner. Wild-ass-speculation.

Not the vent line fitting.

Seperate radiator/ tranny cooler.

Greetings !
That is the transmission vent, there is usually a breather of some type driven into the bore of the hole shown in your picture.
The only reason for oil to puke out there is if the level in the tranny is high due to overfilling or if coolant is leaking into the trans through the cooler in the radiator.
Another posibility is the transmission case could be cracked allowing pressurized oil into the vent area.
Hope this helps !
Have a great day !

Wow. It is the vent. I initially read that to be the vacuum, not the vent, although I retyped the word vent........

Anyway, I am off to check the fluid level. I do not know how it would get too full overnight. I have not added fluid for a couple months.

I sure hope the housing is not cracked to allow the pressure in there!!!!!

Thanks.

I guess I had just over filled it and it didn't care until last night.

I let it warm up and checked the fluid, it was a little high. I took it out for a little test drive and everything worked properly. When I was done it did not leak a single drop.

Thanks for the help.

Cool.

Don't overfill if you can help it though, it aerates the hell out of the fluid. Pumps don't like cavitation. :D

Explain to me how overfilling it would cause cavitation. Cavitation is when the pump starts sucking air. How would having too much fluid cause it to suck air? In the past I have routinely overfilled the auto trannies in my crawlers to prevent cavitation on extreme angles. If I overfilled it too much it came out the top, like this one did.

I'm thinking it doesn't really cavitate, rather the spinning tranny parts churn the ATF (now an oil bath for them) into frothy aeratedness, and that's what gets sucked through the system.

Or I could be completely up in the night, also.

"Cavitation is defined as the phenomenon of formation of vapour bubbles of a flowing liquid in a region where the pressure of the liquid falls below its vapour pressure." That being the case I would say that Carl is right and it is the churning that makes it over flow.

Carl's on the right track... that is what I was thinking of... unless the thing is totally full of oil some air always seems to find it's way in and get beat into a froth, which then wreaks havoc on the pump.

At least that's how it worked on the pressure washer pumps, which are vented as well. If they got overfilled w/oil it would mix all the air in and make life miserable for me. :D

Bubbles = air in the pump.
