Thanksgiving Weekend; Bartlett Wash & Spring Canyon Bottom

We made a quick day trip down to Moab in the Landcruiser, despite some issues. It wasn't too exciting, but ended up being quite scenic.

We drove down on Saturday morning, turned off at Blue Hills Road and followed it to the turn off for Bartlett Wash. We headed South, then turned off by the end of 'The Pickle'. We ended up doing some playing in the deep sand and found our way to Hidden Canyon. We did a bit of hiking up in the Hidden Canyon area and explored some of the side trails.

On the way back I took some video just for fun. It doesn't look too crazy, but we were moving pretty good, bouncing and sliding around. It was fun... even managed to drift the 6000 pound AWD SUV. :D

After that we hopped onto Dubinky Wells road and made our way over to Hey Joe Canyon and Spring Canyon Bottom. This was a first for me, I had never explored that part before. The road was pretty intense, it was cut into the cliff and had a pretty big ledge on one side. Daisy didn't seem to mind it, Catherine on the other hand, looked like this-

Once in the canyon bottom we found the Green River and a neat old trestle that was part of a cable bridge that once provided a way across the Green River.

We played around for a bit, then continued on down the road next to the river.

Eventually the road became more difficult than I was willing to attempt. There was a large boulder in the center of the road, room for 4wheelers on one side and lots of rock on the other side. We parked and explored the area, took some pics and then headed back up the road from Spring Canyon Bottom.

The exit freaked out Catherine even more, since the cliff was on her side. We had to pull over to let 2 TJ's go by and that really spooked her. She apparently hates heights!? :ugh:

Hey Greg,

What is your video camera and mount set up if you do not mind? I do some video taping with my Canon FS10 on my ATV but the lack of image stabilization really makes it jumpy. Also, I have not been able to find a mount that I can put on the truck.

If I remember right, did that shelf road down to Spring Canyon bottom used to be fairly rocky? I think I rode my dirtbike up that back in 96/97 and it was a little tricky. From that video it looked like it was graded fairly well.

Thanks for the pics!!

Hey Zach,

That video was taken with a GoPro digitial sports camera. I actually have it up for sale.

I used their suction cup mount for those videos, which is $30. It works pretty well on smooth surfaces. I have used it on my helmet while riding my dirtbike and on the body of the Landcruiser in those videos above. They have a few other mounting options, including a tube clamp. That could work well for your ATV. If you wear a helmet while riding the ATV, that would probably be the best... use the suction cup mount on your helmet and your body acts as a stabilizer for even less bumpy video. I like the helmet mount because the camera sees where you look.

I'm not sure what the trail looked like before, that was my first trip out to Hey Joe Canyon. It looked like it was recently graded, so you are probably right about it being rocky before.

Nice trip. My wifes the same way, she hates to be on the side with the cliff.
I really need to get out, I'm going crazy it's just home, work, home, work etc.

Thanks for the info Greg. I had used a helmet cam thing from Oregon Scientific for a little bit but I did not like the video and sound quality. From your video it seems like it has pretty good quality with both. I will shoot you a PM.
Thanks,
Zack

hahah that pic of Catherine looks like she's an elf or something. Neat!

Being the passenger on the low side of cliff trails SUCKS!!! Tara can fully empathize! Her first trip out here was to Jacob City, and for a flatlander that's a pretty burly road, staring out at the valley floor below. :D
