Seriously, how long are these people planning on being stranded? We don't live in the middle of nowhere...

Vegas is 6 hours away for Bob Saget's sake...

I doubt that's why any reasonable person would build up a food supply. I don't see a problem with being prepared for natural disasters or zombies. Some live life with Murphy's law in mind.

:spork:

Yet I do realize this is a troll thread. :p

Aside from the fact that I had never seen any "bulk" food for sale like I do since I've moved to Utah, I do have to give a shred of credit for the thought.

You guys say we live in a world where rescue will come fast, or we can just drive to some other place with resources. But think about what is going on in Haiti right now, and how long it took for rescue in New Orleans. Rescue hasn't/wasn't easy, quick, or without major complications.

Now factor in that some of the towns in Utah are still semi secluded (City Center Eagle Mtn for instance) and you have the chance for long term lack of rescue from worst case scenario events.

But I'm digressing here. I don't have more than the supply that's in my pantry, and that would get me through a couple weeks. From there, I'd either hole up with my neighbors/pillage for food, or hike to the nearest WalMart and ransack their supply :)

Have gun, will travel.

One of the most logical posts I have seen in awhile. In some severe cases people have been known to eat their pets and would probably even eat their children if given the opportunity.

A keen eye for trouble ;) Pretty much the MO when I saw the OP

I guess I don't get it. It doesn't take much to be stranded without the ability to get food. When it costs little/nothing to be prepared or work a food supply into your repertoire, why is it funny? Would it have been funny if those in Haiti has the same for sight? What about those in Katrina? What about those in the Northeast that were snowed in for just a few days and were already starting to panic?

A 5 gallon pale of dried milk doesn't last long for a big family, in my house growing up we drank 2 gallons of milk a day.

A close minded vantage point will result in a close minded approach. My wife and I have a few weeks worth of food storage, its cost us little or nothing out of the ordinary, the way we utilize it, its basically just 'back stock' of our normal grocery buying.

Hey, was it that obvious:p RME has been a little slow lately.......

You have to understand how odd stuff like this looks to outsiders. Two years of food, bomb shelters, and personal armories all can seem a little strange to city dwellers. Much like peep shows and gay pride parades would be to country folk:greg:

I grew up in Maine, and although we had food storage, it was a bit weird at first to see the bulk food products vendors when I moved to Utah. It's a bit harder to accumulate food storage when you live in apartments, but I have enough for a month or two. I have little sympathy for those who choose not to listen to the warning signs of what could happen and prepare themselves, they may very well be the ones that will try to steal from those who are prepared and die off.

Also, you have to admit the wal-mart marketing was fantastic!!! That is the greatest thing about this whole thread. Wal-mart just needed to add some of those creepy rapture paintings for the complete package......

I don't really get the history behind the zombies and troll thread stuff, but food storage is a great way to plan for the unexpected. I work on commission, try to have money reserves and food reserves. When months are lean we use it, when sales are good we add to it. It may be a loss of a job, poor health issues causing no income or lots of debt, hell it could be a natual disaster. Either way its a great idea. That's my wifes favorite isle in the store.

When you look at the Gov do you have faith in them to save you or even expect it? I hope not. A good plan is way better than no plan and panic.

I wasn't raised here, not of the local "faith". But we had a small survival kit for hurricanes in Hawaii, and a small one for earthquakes when we lived in California. I don't count on the gov't for my survival. I see storage as a fact of life...

I don't see it as a religious act at all. It's just preparedness. Prepared for whatever: loss of job/income, earthquake, global warming (jab), etc...

Utah just has the market & mindset for places like wallyworld to offer bulk storage good. I bet their not the only place offering it. :p
