Throttle Position Sensor

So last year the Jeep would not shift out of first gear at times, then for no apparent reason it would start to shift just fine. Sometimes it will act up when the engine was cold, other times it has done it coming off a 6 hour trail. I figured it was the transmission because I did not know the history of it when I swapped in the 5.2L. So I just had the transmission rebuilt, i get it in right before I am ready to head to Moab, I decided I had better take a quick shake down run and I head down the road. All is well....wait I spoke to soon, back to not shifting out of first gear. Drive like an asshole for 10 minutes driving 10 miles an hour because it’s stuck in first and bam, back to shifting normally.

I am at a loss here so I started doing some research on other things that may be wrong. Do you guys think that the Throttle Position Sensor could be the culprit? I have read that they can cause issues similar to this but I would like to hear from some other people. I also heard moisture can be tough on them and it so happens I have a hood vents right above this area, well almost the entire hood.

So does anyone have any ideas or think the TPS could be causing the issue? Or anything I could be overlooking? Did I just blow a bunch of money on a trans that I didn’t need to fix or is it wishful thinking?

Thanks in advance for any opinions or ideas

Hey Slangy,
My Jeep is doing this right now. What did you determine?

I had a TJ doing that, and it was the TPS. Happened part way through the White Rim Trail and I had to nurse it off.

I finally took it to a shop before I sold that particular Jeep. It was the TPS sensor.....so they said, although when I was driving it home before it sold, the damn thing did it again. So to be honest, I never got to the bottom of it. The kid who bought it was going to dig into the repair. Sorry I don't have more info for you.

No worries and thanks. I’ll keep researching it.

It is the thing that makes most sense. Maybe Slangy’s occurred again because his new part was faulty. I’ve had that happen before which is why I tend to buy Mopar parts for any sensor’s. Yes, they’re a bit more money, but way more reliable. Thanks for the input.
