Time to Repaint the Samurai

Ok, so it's time to repaint mine and my Dad's Samurai's. The deal is though that we want to do it cheap. I mean dirt cheap! So we've been thinking about rattle can primer sealer. Anyone used it before? Good, bad, ugly? Just looking for info or pics if anyone's got them.

when i painted my jeep i went to the following stores:
slc auto paint and glass off of 585 w and 3900 s, had a primer sealer for 50 bucks for 1 qt paint and 1qt reducer. which is enough to do a Cherokee sized vehicle. then i went to auto body supply on 80 w and 3300 south and picked up a gallon of industrial urethane for really cheap i think it was around 100 or so for the gallon with the reducers and every thing, the whole paint job with supplies and everything cost around 500 bucks (which was a few years ago, and you could probly do it cheaper i had bought a few things i dint use). it has held up really well.

The idea is kind of crazy, and I always wanted to try it on a junker car... but here is a small thread on how this charger was painted... for under $50

I'm sold on the idea, as long as you were able to have a few days to work on your car and 50 bucks. I think I'm going to try it with my tj once I get a couple front fenders for it.

There's a guy on Ebay selling decent paint for about $69 a gallon (last time I pruchased some), and a gallon would probably do two Sammys. Harbor Freight has spray guns for $39 or less. Hard to beat two paint jobs for under $100. Here's what the Ebay paint looks like.

So how difficult is it to use a spray gun? (Stupid question I know). Plus I assume that like with everything, its all in the prep work.

It's all in the prep work. Quick/dirty prep work = quick/dirty paint job (see my 'Jeep' for reference) I got what I expected, but then again, I only spent a couple of days prepping/masking/painting.

If you can you use a spray can, you'll love the spray gun once you get it dialed in. However, the quality is all over the board on a spray gun and you basicly get what you pay for for the most part.

Like I said, we want quick and cheap. My Dads Sami is his DD, so we would want to do it as a weekend job or in sections. Any recommendations for a cheap, decent sprayer? What should we do for prep?

Nice looking rig man. :D

As for prep work, sand out the pitted areas, smooth the surface, DA or scuff up all shiney surfaces, mud, sand, tape and paint. The more you do, the better the paint job, like Marc said. I spent 30 hours just on the final prep and paint on my TJ, but I changed the color inside and out. Of course I cut it up after that and have to do it again.

No recommendations on a 'cheap' sprayer. I use a $ATA. Not cheap. (at least it wasn't when I bought it 8 decades ago)

Sand 'til it's smooth with like 120 (feel free to start with 80 or even coarser grits, but keep in mind sometimes they are worse than what you're trying to get out), get a finer grit (220-240) and sand some more 'til it's more smooth, and then sand it again with a finer grit until it actually is smooth (I did my 'Jeep' with 320 on a DA sander--keep your sander FLAT against the panel or you'll get tool marks in the finish).

EVERY thing you can feel or see will be magnified with paint on it. If you notice it at all, fix it. (The guys that taught me told me to try to make it feel like the skin on a hot gals butt (with Cody coming out of the closet earlier today, he'd need a different picture, but maybe he'll understand?)--a sexist analogy, but honestly pretty accurate)

Try an old fender or hood or something kicking around before you do the Sami (or not--depends on if you want some practice). Do one side quick and dirty, and the other take your time, sand, sand, fix, bondo, sand etc. until you hate what you've started, and then sand, fix, sand until it's nice. Compare and decide where you want to fall for quality.

I did a write up a few years ago on here, somewhere. I don't remember what I was painting, but I took a LOT of time typing a bunch of stuff up.

have you painted the sammis yet? if so, what did you end up using?
No! My Dad keeps on stalling, and I'm getting really busy with an upcoming 'event' (wedding) so I haven't had time to do mine either. This fall for sure, unless anyone wants to get me a really nice wedding gift and do it for me!:D
