Like I said, we want quick and cheap. My Dads Sami is his DD, so we would want to do it as a weekend job or in sections. Any recommendations for a cheap, decent sprayer? What should we do for prep?
No recommendations on a 'cheap' sprayer. I use a $ATA. Not cheap. (at least it wasn't when I bought it 8 decades ago)
Sand 'til it's smooth with like 120 (feel free to start with 80 or even coarser grits, but keep in mind sometimes they are worse than what you're trying to get out), get a finer grit (220-240) and sand some more 'til it's more smooth, and then sand it again with a finer grit until it actually is smooth (I did my 'Jeep' with 320 on a DA sander--keep your sander FLAT against the panel or you'll get tool marks in the finish).
EVERY thing you can feel or see will be magnified with paint on it. If you notice it at all, fix it. (The guys that taught me told me to try to make it feel like the skin on a hot gals butt (with Cody coming out of the closet earlier today, he'd need a different picture, but maybe he'll understand?)--a sexist analogy, but honestly pretty accurate)
Try an old fender or hood or something kicking around before you do the Sami (or not--depends on if you want some practice). Do one side quick and dirty, and the other take your time, sand, sand, fix, bondo, sand etc. until you hate what you've started, and then sand, fix, sand until it's nice. Compare and decide where you want to fall for quality.
I did a write up a few years ago on here, somewhere. I don't remember what I was painting, but I took a LOT of time typing a bunch of stuff up.
