Tire balancing compounds

Time to open this back up...

Equal sucks - plugs the stem each time you air down and even though I have dry air, the Equal is in clumps.

Now I have BB's and I still can't balance these tires. What gives?????

I realize it's cold up here, but they should be warmed up by the time I drive 10 miles to get to the freeway....

On my 38.5 SXs on H1s I'm try the airsoft pellets. THIS site says 12oz for a 38.5x14.50x16.5, so that's what I put in. I'll let you guys know how it works for me.

The only thing I can figure is I dont' have enough in my front tires... The rear tires I put 1.3 lbs in each (because they had rubber patches in them from the factory and one came loose so I took the other out). The front's I put about .6-.7 lbs in each tire as they didn't have that patch. Maybe they need the 1.3 lbs in each as well?

I would go simply off of oz's, but my high tech UPS scale only does lbs ;) And it's much easier to just toss a bottle of 1500 bb's in there than count them out.

New, I had no problems with any vibrations at all - and the weren't balanced.

Ding ding.. I am. I drive my rig to the trail, air down, wheel, air back up and drive home. Apparently it doesn't take much moisture to make it clump up..... How much could be gettting past my filter drier? I've never noticed any on the nozzle or my hand when I pull the hose out of the coupler. Believe me, I was shocked when I busted down the beads to find it was clumped up. Before that, I was just tired of how long it took to air down and with no difference in balancing, I was ready to try something else.

EDIT: I probably didn't have a big enough bag in my tires. I ordered 8 oz and in the checkout notes, I todl them what I had and if I needed bigger bags, to change my order and ship the correct stuff. They didn't, but I think they flaked on it. Every place I read now says 10 oz or more. They sent me the 8 oz bags.....

I am running 37" pitbull rockers with bead locks I put about 1/2 cup in each tire and have been running them for a while now. no problems. Every time you stop you can hear them fall down to the bottom. Kinda weird sounding at first.

Geeze.. I put the remainder full bottle in each front today and it made no difference.

If I could tell which tire(s) were causing it I could do better at fixing it. But it's shaking so dang bad that you can't tell where the shake is coming from. The steering wheel doesn't move, that's why I keep messing with the rears. I figure if the steering wheel moved, it would lead me to the front tires. And no, I haven't rotated them. I guess that's my next step.. Rotate them and see if my steering wheel does start shaking.

..>Either that, or just bite the bullet and take them to someone. But the question is who would balance 39x16.5" tires?

I finally ponied up the dough for some centramatics for my Dodge CTD. I'm only running 35" Toyo MT's on it, but after having them balanced twice (different tire shop each time), and still having some vibration I decided what-the-hell. They are awesome!!! The beauty of them is that they work at basically all speeds. Before I usually had a slight vibration at 45mph and then quite a good shake at 65-68mph. Now it runs smooth at all speeds - like it did with stock A/T tires. I figured this way I will never have to pay for balancing again.

Bummer that you are so far away since mine are 8 on 6.5...I would let you try them out for a few days. I'm gonna bolt them onto my 4runner when I'm done swapping my 1-ton axles on so that I can see if they work with my 42's.

I would take it down and at least have them spin them to make sure that you don't have a bent rim. Then I would start checking your links and steering arms just to be sure.

Funny you mentioned these... I remembered that Badger mentioned them long time ago and was just searching them out to see if I wanted to try them.

Which did you buy? The 300 series? You get 4 balancers for $200. Or the 400 series is about the same each - or maybe pair, it doesn't say.

Suspension is new and tight - it's tires/rims :-\

The problem is nobody wants to put 39" tires on their machine for fear of burning it up. But maybe I'll take it down to Discount tomorrow morning and beg them... Only problem is, now I have bb's in my tires. I guess I could always let them balance them, hoping the bb's aren't going to make it worse and only help... Or I could beg them to take them out or I can do it before I go...

You need the bb's out to balance them. Buy a bubble balancer and some weights, do it yourself. If you know how to run a bubble balancer you can do a better job of it than the spinners.

Seriously? I used to balance massive tires, including quite a few sets of 44" Boggers on a standard car tire balancer. You just have to help it get going. :busted: We have even had to pull the cover off & trick the sensor to think the cover was down, do balance some tall & wide drag slicks.

If you're still having a hard time finding someone to balance big tires, go to a semi truck shop. They balance those wide-base steer tires all the time, I bet they're almost as big & heavier than your 39's.

My local Les Schwab has vowed to try and balance 46" Michelins, if I get some in. They said the "smaller" tires like 38's were not an issue. :D

They deal with big semi tires, and a lot of agricultural stuff though.

Maybe I'll give my local Les Schwab a visit today then.... I just remember places complaining/refusing about balancing my 37's when I had them. Because of it, I haven't tried my 39's.

I guess I'll go remove the bb's... ;)
