Anyone know a good web link or other source on tire sizes that will fit various vehicle without a lift etc? I have only been able to find ones for Jeeps. (if you have followed my vehicle search, thread I am looking mostly for info on 03-04 Grand Cherokee, Discovery, 4runner and Montero).

Any personal experince is also helpful.

You can fit a 265 75 R16 on a stock disco, but they will rub a bit.

245 75 16's fit fine.

I have a 98 4-Runner. It came stock with 265 70R 16. I know it's not a 2003-04 but I doubt they have changed tire size.

For the Grand Cherokee it depends on how you will use it. You can fit 31's stock but if you go offroad at all they will rub like a mad man. If you buy the upcountry package they wont be so bad if you put a Budget boost on it you wont rub as bad. I had an 02 which is the same and I had Old man Emu springs that gave it about 2 inches of lift and a budget boost that gave it two more and I ran 265/75/16 TrXus MT's and I had to do some trimming to be able to go offroad. For the grand cherokee you can also find a lot of info at NAGCA.COM

For the 2003-2004 4Runners, the largest tires you can fit are 265/75/16's or 265/70/17's, depending on the wheel size you end up with. Note that there are not any 16" wheels which will fit on the ones equipped with 17's as the calipers are bigger and will not clear, should one want 16's.

265-75-r16 tires will not fit well on a stock height disco. We lifted our 2003 disco 3" and then fit them. I think I realy could fit a true 33" tyre with out any rubbing right now. If you're thinking about a discovery still and would like to lift it a little 1-3" let me know I can help you out. If you have any questions about the discoveries also let me know.

Hey Darren,

Do you know this for sure about the 17's? My Bro-in-law has a 04 Tacoma that came with 17's and he also has an 02 4Runner that came with 16's. He talked his wife into trading wheels between the two and he claims that the 16's fit on his 17 equipped Tacoma... perhaps the Taco has a substantially different braking setup than the runner???

Yeah, Adam, I know this to be true for the 4Runners. It's the same thing as the previous generation ('96-'02), where 15" wheels will not fit on those that came with 16's. I had no idea, though, that Tacos came with 17's. Huh. Never seen one. Never heard of anyone talk about that. In fact, I just went to Toyota's site, and they don't show 17's as being available for them. Interesting.

OK... I pooched it... I don't know my Toyota truck models.... his is a Tundra with V-8..... sorry about that...

His has got factory 17's on it.... said they only come with the heavy tow package that has the better brakes and tranny package....

Anyway... all the rest holds true... so I am not sure how close the Tundra braking is to the 4Runner braking...

I guess I would like to know your overall take on the disco. Recommended? My main concern is milage, as I have a long commute, but it seems like one of the best stock off-roaders outthere.

Mike the 265 will fit but it will rub without sway bars. Like you said, it is a poor fit but I have seen it done.

Mike is your last name Judd?

Yes that's my last name.

Ok my overall take on the Disco. I love the vehicle, does it have a few issues? yes we have had about 4 things fixed on our 2003 from the dealer. I believe that all new cars have a few issues and that you work through them and make things better. The mileage does suck it got about 15 mpg. (I havn't checked it latley since we added a roof rack, lights and an ARB bumper, I'm sure it's lower than that know.) We have regeared ours with the GBR 4.11 gears and intalled Detroit Tru-tracs. It does very well off-road. It will go anywhere you feel like taking a $40+ thousand dollar vehicle. The 2004 will do even better with the center diff locker back as standard. We are going to install a CDL when time allows.

I wasn't very impressed with the 4 Runner. It was around $35-40K and didn't have the leather, the interior feels cheap, no power seats, didn't have as much interior room. The one thing it did have was alot more power than the Disco but so did the Grand Cherokee. When we test drove everything the Grand Cherokee with the HO motor rocked. I just wasn't sold on the unibody thing. (and before we test drove these I was trying to talk my wife into the Jeep.) This is the car my wife drives and she loves it.

Thats just my opinion. If you have any other questions let me know.

I know what you mean about the 4runner. On paper it seems like the top pick (power and torque, milage, reliablity etc), the V8 even has rear locking dif, but driving it it just has no soul. I am really after a vehicle that can seat 7, so my finalists are the 4runner, disco (if only they could get that mialage up-I drive 90 miles/day so it will hurt alot) and the montero (odd looking but around town fun to drive). It may come down to the best deal.

Nope. They're open with a traction contol system.

lifted from the Toyota web site:
"V8 4WD Full-time 4-wheel drive with Torsen® [1] limited-slip center differential with locking feature."

Says the same on the V6 except is not full-time 4wd.

That's still describing the center diff, not the axle's diff. Locking the center puts it into conventional 4WD from AWD. The front and rear are still open with the electronic traction control providing limited slip characteristics.
