Tires...yet again

This has been a great thread. Tires is one of those things where it is really expensive to test or try something new. Good to hear others thoughts and experiences here. I am going to need to replace the tires on my Hemi and on the Cummins here soon. I think the Hemi will be getting the Goodyear Silent Armors and the Cummins may end up with either the same or some Toyo's. I have had great experiences with both and I have been impressed with the mileage out of both as well. The Hemi has the stock Goodyears on it now and they have seen 34,000 miles with no rotations, no re balance, and no alignment either. The last Toyo's I had went 56,000 miles with one rotation, no re balance, and no alignment. I think the Hemi's tires will go for another 10,000 with out too much trouble. That is unheard of for me to go that long on a set of OEM tires.

Glad to hear you've had a good experience with Jay's, maybe they've turned things around with the name change and exterior remodel. When I lived in Bountiful, everyone I knew thought they were shady... including a friend that worked there.
I also had a great experience with Jay's. I came up all the way from Orem to pick up the last 4 available 33" general grabbers anywhere...fr now at least. I will be using them from now on for all my tires and I would recommend them for anyone.

Also, since the General Grabber was one of the original options of this thread but since they weren't chosen, I can enlighten a little. So far they have been great. They are not a loud tire by any means. I cannot hear or feel them while driving. They have been great on icy roads and rain. I have not driven in the snow yet or wheeled on them. I also pull a trailer everyday but don't know how fast they will wear out yet since they've only been on for a few weeks.

I spend a ton of money on tires and wheels every year. Way too much. I buy from Jay's exclusively because I know I will get the best price and great service. Everyone I have sent to Jay's comes away feeling like they got treated fairly. Will I let them do anything but tires, wheels and inspections, no way, they are a tire store. I probably pass 20 tire stores on my way to Jay's, he knows that so he has always taken good care of me.

Over time this could be an intersting thread for updates.

In the last 2 months or less I have put Hankook Dynapro ATMs on my Ram CTD and Yokahama Geolander ATS on my Chevy ($2,000 out the wallet very quickly...)

I'll know in a couple of years how good of choices I made.

Seriously thinking about pulling the trigger on some BFG AT KO in the 325/65r18 on Monday, along with the 18" Gunner 8 MB rims I won from Discount Tire. I just keep coming back to the BFG AT's. Stupid things are $369 each. $369!!! vs $246 for the Falken Rocky Mountain ATS/WildPeak A/T which look EXACTLY like the TOYO AT's I have on the work truck. Identical. And it does pretty darn good in the snow, where I go anyway. I worry about when they are worn down though.

$369. Ouch.

Just a couple personal experience data points for the thread here...

That's the first I've ever heard that KM2's do well in the snow. Usually I hear quite the opposite.

I have KM2's on my LJ as well and my opinion is they are borderline terrible on snowy/slick pavement (no mud tire does all that good on slick roads, but I think these are below average even for a mud tire). And in my opinion they do just "okay" in deeper offroad snow. The old style MT/R's I had on the Jeep before were way better in both scenarios. I did have those MT/R's siped, which probably has a lot to do with why they were so much better on snowy/slick pavement. Those old style MT/R's totally kicked the crap out of the KM2's in deep offroad snow too though. That said, I really do like the KM2's for my application. Of the five 35x12.50x17's I bought for my Jeep, the worst one took 4 oz. to balance and one took no weight at all - it was perfect right out of the mold. They stay balanced pretty well between rotations. I can run them 80 MPH down the interstate smooth as silk. Nice and quiet for what they are. Do pretty well everywhere offroad except snow. I've been suspicious of the carcass strength and the sidewalls do have some slices and chipping, but they haven't failed me yet and the tread itself hasn't chunked as bad as I thought they would. Current set has about 23K on them now, looks like they'll be toast at around 35K - exactly what I expect out of a mud tire. I'll buy them again. Agree with earlier comments about them on a tow rig though, don't think I'd even consider them for that application.

I got about 35K out of the 35x12.50x17 Toyo MT's on my CTD. I was never overly impressed with these tires. Especially for the cost. The best one took 5 oz to balance and the worst one took almost a pound. They would always be shimmying on the hiway a couple thousand miles after being rebalanced and rotated. I would say that I think they were hell for stout and I was never concerned with carcass strength on them though.

Have gotten over 50K miles out of three different sets of BFT AT/KO's on my last two Ram CTD's. Running them on my '08 CTD right now, with about 25K on them and they look like they'll go over 50K again. Also have them on m Wife's Denali, in a 265 on 17" wheels, those have about 55K on them and still have over half the tread left! They look like they might just last forever on her car.... I've run these tires as long as they have existed on a bunch of different vehicles. Right now, they are on my DD mentioned above, my Wife's Denali and my work car an LX470. Not the strongest carcasses in the world. Have shredded a few sidewalls over the years, had at least one I can remember that a stone went right through the face of the tread just booking down the PET one day, had one that had something wrong with it to where it wouldn't stay balanced. I always buy road hazzard on them and have had it pay off quite a few times. But, this is over many years, many vehicles and many sets of tires with easily over a quarter million miles total. All in all, I've been totally satisfied with the AT/KO's and continue to run them.

Thanks for the update.

My DD tire requirements are all about getting to the cabin: 5 miles of slick snowpacked roads with steep up and down hills, plus 1/4 mile uphill of 0" to 10" snow which may or may not be wet, powdery, crusted, etc. BFG AT KO's have worked pretty well so far. But so have the Toyo AT's on my work truck...more or less. Worn down they did as well as the worn BFG AT's. The new set is doing pretty good, and has done a great job on packed pavement, even new snow. I don't have new BFG AT's to compare them to...other than what I remember the BFG's doing on those roads when new.

If an MT like the Cooper STT or Toyo MT would do as well (or good enough?) on the packed parts of the road, I'd like the more aggressive tread for the deep snow. That's where the Wrangler Duratrac comes in, but getting it in a 325/65r18 is tough. Oddly, the 39.50 iroks on the jeep have no problem on the packed sections of the road, no problem at all. Maybe I put iroks on the X

The Falken Wild Peak looks like the Toyo AT and the Nitto is similar, but not quite.

I'm trying to buy the tires from Discount since that's who I won the rims from, and they don't have the Toyo's, and the BFG is $348 for the 325/65r18.

I'm stalling.

Sounds like time to stick with the BFGs.

"The ordinary traveller, who never goes off the beaten route...does not need to show more intiative & intelligence than an express package." Theodore Roosevelt

The Toyo AT's on the work truck have done a great job, both worn and new. They did great yesterday driving to and from Carlin, NV, up to the cabin last night on the hard snow pack, and then up the hill through the fresh snow, so today I pulled the trigger from Discount Tire Direct on some Nitto Terra Grapplers in a funky 295/70R18E size (34.4" tall) on the 18x8.5 "Gunner 8" MB rims that I won from Discount Tire Direct and Utah 4 Wheel Drive Association!!! The Toyo AT's and the Nitto Terra Grapplers are very similar, made by same company.

Other factors:
-The BFG's came in a 325/65R18, and I was afraid that they would be too wide to run tire chains. Plus, apparently they are gold-plated now.
-Trail Grapplers/Cooper STT/other MT's ... lack of siping had me concerned on snow pack. I had vowed to go with an aggressive mud terrain tread when the current BFG's wore out for those deeper snow moments...but overall prowess in its other intended activities took a higher priority. Comparing potential buyer remorse moments: Getting stuck at cabin (within walking distance of chained up blazer on 35's) or sliding on snow packed roads, both situations throughout the life of the tires.
-Duratrac ... wear and handling, plus available sizes and pricing.

So I'm trying something new and supporting a business that supports U4. We'll see what happens this winter and next with these tires, in addition to towing the jeep.

I'd say I was overthinking this...but when it concerns this much money, I wanna make sure I get what I need.

I had three sets of Nittos. They wore out faster than they were rated for, but discount always gave me the difference towards a new set - so I really didn't mind. Make sure Discount will pro rate them if they wear faster than their rating.

A friend with a Duramax has had the same experience with Nittos. Curious to see how they do for you. You seem to burn through tires mucho faster than I do anyway? How many sets have you had since I bought the Dodge?

(Oh, and why the 18"? Did you choose the wheels or was that what you won?)

I had a set of Nittos...IMO, they were garbage. I won't ever run them again.

I agree with you Brett, when I'm spending this much money, I want to make sure I get it right. That's why I ended up with the tried and true BFGs. FWIW, most shops were quoting ~$500/tire for the 325/65R18 BFGs, Discount on 12600 S. gave me a written quote for $320 a tire, Jay's matched that price. I've spent a lot of money with Discount and every time I'm in there, they still act like I should be grateful to be doing business with them. First time at Jay's and they treated me like I'd been a lifelong customer.

Chose the 18's. Not a lot of choices that I liked. 17x8 or 18x8.5. Seriously hope it wasn't a bait and switch on the tires (Toyo/Nitto). Since '05, I've had 3.5 sets of BFG's: 295/75r16, then 315/75r16 (replaced 2 on that set) and now 305/70r16. Only complaint is the wear. Religiously rotated. Very evenly worn, but worn.

Well, been happy with the Toyos, and reviews and what I've been told, the Toyo's and Nitto's should be the same. Hoping that is true. Been happy with the BFG's, but cost and size. Here's hoping!

I thought there were more sets than that? That doesn't sound quite as bad as I thought. I've been fairly happy with my Goodyear Silent Armors. The passenger side ones have almost 40K on them and are still going pretty strong (the drivers side ones got killed by a chunk of alum. that got kicked up in the highway). I would probably buy them again, but they only have a "D" rated 17" (at least when I bought--granted, I've had no issues with squirm or overheating when towing heavy). My truck is at 150300 miles tonight. Bought it with 113400 two years ago in November.

I'm not a fan of the bigger wheels like the 18". Maybe the prices will come down as demand increases as F*rd trucks only come with 18 or 20" tires now ("sweet" bling)

I think he got about 20K out his Nittos on the Duramax. I know for SURE he was under 30K. Truck had 25 miles on it when he bought it with the Nittos installed at the dealer.

Wow, 20K sucks.

It seems like more sets, but it's 3.5 sets in 6 years, so just under 2 years per set. 110,000 miles total, 31,000 miles per set. No where near 50K, but I also changed them out when I thought they would do well in the snow. Possibly could have gotten another 5K on dry pavement. The 315's got shredded when I was building the cabin, towing mini-hoes and bobcats and other equipment up gravel roads, so I ended up replacing 2 of them sooner than expected.

Just checked...my order is packaged and will ship tomorrow. As little as I drive the X anymore, it might take a while for this experiment to play out.

I think I averaged around 35k on the Nitto's - I didn't let them wear out all the way though. I've got about 20K on my BFG AT's, and I'm not to optimistic about getting 50K.
