Rockmonkey did it with his YJ, I think he said it was pretty straight forward.

I dunno what would make it so difficult? Worse case, you have to get a different crossmember (or build a new one, or modify your current one) and aren't the trannies computer controlled (not a huge issue but something to think about).

As long as you can find a donor jeep it's all just turning wrenches.

If you hadn't already spent money on the cage I would say sell yours and buy an auto.

what would you use
I would use the best auto that comes with the new V8 that I would drop in at the same time.
Think about your ultimate complete drivetrain and not just a piece at a time.

If you can't find a donor vehicle. It gets pricey real quick. I am in the planning stage of an auto swap but with an older tranny (TF999 three speed) to run a reverse manual valve body. Here is what I came up with...

TF999 Pre '94- (no price yet)
Torque Convertor- Art Carr custom convertor $480
Tranny Mount- (no price yet)
Tranny mount bracket- Mopar part # 52058548AB $48.48
Flex Plate- Jeep Recyclers $70.00
Deep Tranny Pan- Mopar part # P4007886 (no price yet)
Dip stick tube- Mopar part # 52104243AD $22.31
Dip stick- Mopar part #52104240AD $10.56
Kick down cable- Mopar part # 52104352AA $50.96
Reverse valve body- Art Carr part #C-30072 $265.56
Teraflex seal extension- part#TL621 $14.50
Clutch hole cover plate- Jeep Recyclers $15.00
Engine/ Bell housing cover plate- Mopar part #J3237817 $35.20
Inspection Plate- Mopar part #52118136AB $9.84

That is what I came up with but there might be more that would be needed. Of course you need new driveshafts front and rear.

I bet if you put a four to one in your tcase that ywould help you a lot from staling it while wheeling or put an atlas in it i that might be an idea.

I'am not saying all auto suck, just the factory one that came in the tj's. I have a 5-speed in mine, a buddy of mine has an auto we have about the same set up, I feel my jeep has more power than his the auto, the auto heats up, and on steep climbs the trans. kicks out of gear due to loss of fluid I know if he put a deep pan that might not happen, I run the 4 to1 in my t-case I don't stall my jeep to often, it's a little bit more work to run with an manual than the auto due to shift'n and clutch'n but thats just my opinion, I've ran auto's and manual's, I perfer the manual. Just my .02, what ever you becide just keep the shiny side up.

Okay, sorry it's taken me so long to get to this thread... It's easy. Do it! I got mine from a 93 4.0 YJ. It's a TF999 (as was mentioned above), and it's also known as a 35RH (or maybe it's 32RH.. :ugh: ). Basically, take off your manual tranny and give it to Jake. Remove the clutch, and BE SURE TO TAKE OUT THE PILOT BEARING!!! Bolt on a flex plate. Bolt on the transmission, and bolt the torque converter to the flex plate. Hook up the transmission lines to your shiny new tranny cooler, hook up your shifter, reinstall your t-case and shiny new driveshafts. Now go wheeling and enjoy the much smoother and more capable transmission. I've had my rig on stuff that's basicaly vertical (and I've got the video to prove it :D ) and never had the tranny slip due to verticalness. The only time it has ever started to slip is when it wass very low on fluid (due to leakage after a roll). I've been absolutely thrilled with my auto, and will never go back to a stick in a purpose-built crawler. Other than my shifter and cooler, I used all junk yard parts, and I really couldn't be much happier with the way it works.
