Harrassing her is outside the scope of the law. I don't disagree with him pulling her over.
I just re-read the original post and I don't see any any harassment. Why assume the cop is lying? Perhaps there was a Jeep reported stolen somewhere in the state, and he was DOING HIS JOB, and investigating a possible lead. Everyone complains that cops don't do anything to track down stolen vehicles, and then when someone is pulled over because of a possible match to a stolen vehicle, people call it harassment! Man it must suck to be a cop! They just can't win! He had a reason for pulling her over (because she was engaged in breaking the law), and he followed up on a stolen vehicle report. He probably ran the plate through his computer, saw a male name on the registration and a female driver, combined with a possible vehicle theft report, and pulled her over to rule out theft. Once she explained it was her husbands Jeep he says "that explains it", meaning the registration mismatch, and let her go without a ticket. Excellent job officer!
This is true but is it considered a primary offense? And how many people have ever been pulled over or even ticketed as a secondary offense. I've had my truck for 11 years and a front plate has never been mounted on it.
I once heard a story somewhere that went something like this:
A car is traveling down the road above the speed limit, but at roughly the same speed of the rest of the traffic. The car was pulled over and when the cop walked up to the driver, the driver said, "officer, why did you pull me over when everyone else was speeding too?" The officer asked, "have you ever been fishing?" The driver replied, "yes." The officer asked, "have you ever tried to catch
all the fish?"
Just because you've gotten away with it for 11 years doesn't mean it is not against the law. It's still a law, and you can still be ticketed for it.
