Utah license plate laws requires that every vehicle registered in Utah, other than a motorcycle, trailer, or semi trailer, must have a license plate securely attached to the front and rear of the vehicle.

If it's not worth the ofcr's time to write out the ticket then lucky you .... and if you've gotten away w/ 'breaking the law' then lucky you!!!

Harrassing her is outside the scope of the law. I don't disagree with him pulling her over.

I just re-read the original post and I don't see any any harassment. Why assume the cop is lying? Perhaps there was a Jeep reported stolen somewhere in the state, and he was DOING HIS JOB, and investigating a possible lead. Everyone complains that cops don't do anything to track down stolen vehicles, and then when someone is pulled over because of a possible match to a stolen vehicle, people call it harassment! Man it must suck to be a cop! They just can't win! He had a reason for pulling her over (because she was engaged in breaking the law), and he followed up on a stolen vehicle report. He probably ran the plate through his computer, saw a male name on the registration and a female driver, combined with a possible vehicle theft report, and pulled her over to rule out theft. Once she explained it was her husbands Jeep he says "that explains it", meaning the registration mismatch, and let her go without a ticket. Excellent job officer!

This is true but is it considered a primary offense? And how many people have ever been pulled over or even ticketed as a secondary offense. I've had my truck for 11 years and a front plate has never been mounted on it.

I once heard a story somewhere that went something like this:

A car is traveling down the road above the speed limit, but at roughly the same speed of the rest of the traffic. The car was pulled over and when the cop walked up to the driver, the driver said, "officer, why did you pull me over when everyone else was speeding too?" The officer asked, "have you ever been fishing?" The driver replied, "yes." The officer asked, "have you ever tried to catch all the fish?"

Just because you've gotten away with it for 11 years doesn't mean it is not against the law. It's still a law, and you can still be ticketed for it.

I choose to drive my VW with illegal mods, I am not shocked when I get pulled over for my tint or tinted plate covers blah blah blah. It sucks but it's my fault. My Jeep doesn't have mudflaps, or proper bumpers etc. If I ever get pulled over in that it's going to be again my fault. If your wife felt uncomfortable by the cops behavior or something like that I can see gettting upset but you walked away free with only a bored cop doing what he is supposed to do.

I'm confused. Anything against the law could be a primary right?. The seat belt law used to be a secondary but I think they can pull you over for that now too.

You may be right. There are some real dicks in Tooele (on the PD I mean :D), so there's that. But yeah, you could be right. I am not in the best mood this afternoon.

EDIT: it does seem a little strange to bring up the "stolen vehicle" before names and registration are compared... that and the fact that I've been asked if my box van was stolen on a stop (burned out headlight) just makes me a little leery. But on the merits of the post, with no subjective evidence, I agree with your opinion.

I was pulled over and ticketed for no front plate by an SL City motorcycle cop in 2001. He was drunk fishing, and I wasn't drunk, but he ticketed me anyway. He asked if I knew why I was being pulled over. Nope.. I think I was going the speed limit, and everything. He said no front plate. I told him that fromt plates are for people who drive drunk. I don't think he liked that. I was happy I didn't get popped for the tint on the car too. I went to court, plead guilty with Circumstances. Judge asked, and I said I don't have a front plate bracket for the car, and it isn't made by subaru anymore. He looked at the ticket and said "I don't think I even know what a Subaru SVX is... $5, no follow up, and no record."

I took it and left. They can pull you for it as a primary (usually only used for drunk fishing), and they can ticket you for it as a primary. You take a chance running without a front plate, so accept the outcome.

Call and complain after you got a warning and BET that particular officer doesn't give too many more no front plate WARNINGS out.
