I remember when I was starting out building stuff for the XJ how "fun" it was to have to cut steel or to join parts together. I DREADED the thought of having to cut or drill any piece of steel that was thicker than 1/16". Anyone else? I remember my cousin, Kendall, and I would borrow his dad's Delta wood  chopsaw with the abrasive wheel attached and hold on for dear life cause if that tube got turned the wrong way it would grab like a mother! Or we'd get the HF grinder and cutoff wheel goin', hunker down and start cutting. Half an hour later the bar would be cut through. Or when it came to welding, I'd have to preheat, gap, and bevel so that my 110v flux-core would hold the 1/4" plates together. It worked for most things, but it would have been so nice if I had access to a bigger MIG for a few welds. I also remember wishing for an afternoon to use a band saw - But I didn't know anyone with one back then. And lack of funds didn't help either. Now we have 2 floor band saws, plus a porta-band in the shop, but I still remember the feelings of not having access to one. Or I think about what I could have done back then if I had access to a plasma cutter, drill press, or any other "specialty" or pro grade tool...

Do you know what I'm talking about? Would it make sense to have a list of people on here that have the "specialty"/pro grade tools that others could borrow? Or do you think people who are in need already ask? Sometimes I think there is a general feeling of: "Look what I have in my garage," which would scare away the would-be borrower. Sometimes I think it's crazy when next door neighbors BOTH have to have they're own welder AND plasma cutter AND band saw, etc. Why not each buy one and swap when needed? I could be crazy :-\.

Just my thoughts... Yours?

And I'll be first in line to let someone use my tools ;).

I'll wager there are small groups of us that already do that. I have a handfull of friends on here who know what's mine is their's. But to lend out some expensive equipment to strangers just isn't going to happen.

Funny, your story about the saw ordeal (been there, done that). Once I bought a Porta-Band, I've never touched my chop saw again.

I agree completely. I'd let friends and maybe family borrow or use some of my tools but I'd never let someone I wasn't friends with borrow it.

I'm sure there are.

I guess I'm referring to fellow RMEers (not what I'd consider strangers) that need to make a few cuts on a band saw or a couple welds under my supervision. Or even better, "let me make the band saw or plasma cuts or let me weld that part up for you" kind of thing.

I say ask and you shall receive...Another member currently has my Oxy Acet Torch setup.:D And I've lent other stuff out over the years as well

A neighbor across the street, who is also a member, has a plasma, bender, and engine hoist...and my welder;)

I have no problem lending stuff out as long as it comes back the same way it left, sure its nice to know the guy but if someone were to do someone else wrong the wrath of RME would pour down:eek:

Now in my younger days i used to sport a rag. Backpack full of cans plus a four-four mag..

For some reason that sing came to mind..

I've been on the "I need help" end. People like Jeremy, Braden, Kurt, Shawn, Caleb, Marc, and probably more that I'm forgetting have offered to help me out when I had projects out of my driveway capabilities. (usually done in their garage)

I think that when someone needs help, the RME community is generally willing to help out..

Edit.. Except for that ALF guy. He's a tool. He always says that he already lent out his oxy setup but I just don't buy it anymore.. ;) just kiddin.. But his tools are probably tainted since they touch so many Chevy parts..

I have done the loaning thing before, it's not that I mind helping people out it's just that they don't return the tool in the same condition it was in when they borrowed it. I have lost many a friend due to this. There is a short list of people that I would ever loan out to and opening up the RME bag is not one of those trustable deals.

Agreed! I've spent a lot of money and time collecting my tools, only to loan them out and have them be abused or just plain never returned. I have a couple very good friends that still have tools of mine. What I really hate is having acquaintances asking to borrow my tools, I've had someone on here ask me a couple times to borrow my tube bender and we're not what I'd consider friends.

Wow, good thing it got Chevy all over it first. It'll probably be OK?

I don't mind lending my tools, but (except for very rare exceptions) I come in the tool package. That way if something breaks or whatever, I know what happened and I can blame myself rather than curse someone else.

Example: You wanna borrow my trailer? It comes with me and my truck.

Example 2: Welder? It's kind of attached to my garage.

I've got a LARGE investment in $$$ in my tools. Makes me treat them a certain way. I don't know that most people treat other people's stuff like they would their own ;)

I used to live next door to a guy that we shared tools with. It was a very rude awakening when I moved from that house how much crap I had to buy that I was used to having around. (Caleb's plasma cutter is eating on me a little, but I'm kind of glad I don't have any spending $$ at the moment ;))

When ever I borrow something it usually cost me twice, once to replace the tool I borrowed and again to buy me one. I do have a buddy on here that I have loaned stuff to and they are always returned in the same or better condition.
