I purchased the HF horizontal band saw 10 years a go also a new high quality blade and used the crap out of it, it has been used so much it bounces off the floor when i use it,

I also wanted a larger table to work on so I purchased the HF vertical wood band saw, installed a 3 phase motor and frequency drive, installed a foot pedal.
purchased a good quality metal blade localy.I use the wood blade for cutting plastic.

That's not a bad option, but where I don't have a porta band to begin with I might as well get a horizontal one. I really like being able to set up a cut and be able to be doing other things while it's cutting.

Scott, which Jet do you have? What type of knives are you making?

Mine is an older 14" vertical. I just watched KSL for a used one I could modify. The main key is to purchase a quality blade.

I've mostly been making hunting and skinning knives.
