tow rig tire size

My 295's are about worn out...considering 315's next time, for the pure coolness factor of bigger tires...no other reason. (295/75's are the same height as 305/70's, just not as fat)

This is on a stock 7.3 Excursion. I know it will hurt towing on the hills...but will it hurt a little or a lot?

If it sucks too bad, I may consider an Edge...would that make up the difference? (then I'd basically have mbryson's set up).

You want to toss mine on your's and take it out for a spin? I know when I switched, the power loss was very noticable.

I finally put a BHAF on mine. That made a HUGE difference. I haven't gotten my foot out of it yet to tell if I got a mileage increase or not, but it does tow mucho bettero. I'm running 265s, though.

I'm kinda thinking about the 315s for the gear reduction at freeway speeds. It may be worth the tradeoff depending on how often you're towing?

There's TONS of used Stuper Duty tire/wheel packages on KSL if you wanted to try a set without forking out the cash for something new.

I had to put 4.56's in mine with 37's to tow the way I wanted too. But I got about 1 mpg difference and it tows much better now with my chip:D

I know with the Dodges w/a Cummins & 3.55 gears, you will get the best mileage w/ 285's... 315's will drop the RPM too far & reduce mileage. Mods will help you turn the tires, but you'll still be burning more fuel with the larger tires.

That being said, I'm leaning towards 305's or 315's.

What's a BHAF? (something something Air Filter?)

I thought you had the 315's.

No 315s here. They're Toyo 285s.

They just LOOK like 315's...

You got a leveling kit on it?

I saw some on a SD yesterday that I thought were 315s...and they were 295's.

I also noticed that I have very little clearance on the back when turned...which may cause problems if I chain up. Even with a lift, with a little flex (little being the key word) there might be problems. Anyone run chains?

No leveling kit (it's still under the Jeep in the garage). I think they're 285s. I'll check when I go home.

You can easily move that plastic inner fender back about an inch to gain more clearance. I think as long as you stick with your factory wheels you'll be fine. Mine are 10" wide, no way I'll ever fit chains and still be able to turn.

I have 315s and a leveling kit. Lost some mileage but still love the look. Not to big, not too small, just right (for me).

I have exactly 3.5" to work with (as determined by the garage door)...the tires will be 1" taller, so I need to get the front up 2" and only 2". 3" is right out.

I'd like to add the famed "X" code front springs, that would be perfect.

I ran 285's on my 99 CTD and I thought it was perfect. Could cruise up to 85 mph without wrapping the motor out too bad and could consistantly get 22+ mpg unloaded freeway mileage cruising around 75-80 mph.

I ran 285's for a while...and considered going back. Speedo read perfect, more power and better mileage.

But the looks thing...

75-80 means 14mpg for me cuz mine ain't a ctd

I had 315's on my PSD (3.73 rear) before I sold it. They fit good with just a level kit on 10" wheels, I did have some minor rubbing at full left turn and going over a bump). The powerloss from 265's was pretty big and noticeable when towing. I was going to swap them for 285's had I kept the truck.

FWIW once the 245's on my Dmax wear out I'm going to 285's

Did you have it chipped or anything?

I only had 265's briefly, then had 285s. I don't know if I ever towed with the 265s.

I noticed a slight difference with the 295's. I'm sure if I went to the 265's again I'd really notice an improvement.
