tow rig tires

I know we have had this discussion before, but tires change and people have different expereinces so am going to do it again.

It is about time to once more buy tires for my Ram 2500 CTD Quad Cab.

Currently running Cooper Discoverer ATRs. Have had them for 2 years, about 45k miles I think.

They have been a pretty good tire for ride and done well on snow and dirt/gravel even with 10,000 of horses and trailer behind us. Not so great in mud.

Any thoughts on good/bad and ugly of tow rig tires?

Not sure how heavy you are towing. I have had great success with the BFG AT's. I prefer an AT over over and MT, just because I do not really get my tow rig off the beaten path. Maybe a dirt road or something, but not much else. I seem to be getting about 60k out of each set. I keep a good eye on the air pressure and rotate as needed, not so much on mileage.

Just make sure and get the load rating you need. I am over my RAWR often, but I stay under my GVRW typically. I have an 86 gal Aux tank in the bed and just filling that puts me close if not over my RAWR.

Every time I go to get tires for the tow rig I end up doing a search on this site. I have run the BFG's all terrains in the past with good results. It seems like my next set will be Goodyear wrangler silent armors. I have to be realistic with the truck. It rarely if ever goes off road but, it does see more than enough snow, rain, and highway. The silent armors seem to be what I want. You might want to check them out. If I remember correctly a few folks here have run them with great results.

I've got 30K on mine. They have a 50K warranty and I don't know why I won't hit that. However, I have had two punctures that have required me to buy two new tires. One puncture is TOTALLY understandable, the other not so much.

One was from a piece of scrap alum. in the road. Just happened to flip up by my front tire and must have wedged itself between the road and my tire as the alum. landed and the rear tire met it. Punched a LARGE hole right through the tread. I don't care WHAT tire you're running, you're buying a tire from something like that.

The second one I'm not so sure about. I killed it on a dirt road last EJS. No trailer or heavy weight in the truck and cruising on a "fire road" north of Moab at about 20-25 mph. Something punched about a 1" hole through the tread and wasted the tire.

I'm not sure if I'll drop the coin on the Silent Armors again or go back to the Toyo MT's again with my next set? Similar pricing

The Silent Armors seem better on the highway and in the snow than the the Toyo MTs.

Good to know your first hand experience on them. I was set on them because I liked the tread pattern and they are made here in the USA. I try to purchase items that are made here rather than over seas. I guess it is just a tick I have. I still may run them because I still don't go off road with the dually. I always have a fight with myself because I want a cool looking tire that can preform well in a variety of terrain. But, let's face it, tow rigs rarely if ever go off road. I believe I speak for most of us when I say that. Most of us just need a tire that does best on the highway, rain, and snow. Shoot, I'll bet most of us really don't care too much what tire is on the tow rig as long as they work.

I have run Toyo's Open Country AT in the past on my little Ford Escape and was very impressed with the wear. I logged 56,000 miles on one set without ever a rotation, alignment, or even checking the tire pressure.

I have run BFG All-Terrians on my Montero Sport with great luck with them (about 80K), but that is a very different vehicle than my truck.

On the Dodge I don't need a real agressive tread but do some off-road, including while pulling the horse trailer (like I said with all the horses runs about 10,000 pounds) on both snow and gravel.

Will have to do some looking into the Michelins, or perhaps give the BFGS a try.

I have the Hankook Dynapro ATM (I think that's the full name, at least) on my F350 with about 10,000 miles on them and I can't even tell that they've worn at all. (and I do check) I was told that they've been outlasting the BFG AT's by about 10k miles. I like 'em!

Keep me updated on how they do.

Best tire that I have ran on my tow rig was Michelins LTX MS I got 70,000 out of them.

This was going to be my post! So I'll just x2 ^^

I have decided that I will not be buying A/T's anymore. They wear out quickly, and ride rough.
I try not to use my tow vehicle in any off road adventures, but in the couple times I have I have not been disappointed with the LTX / MS- Just with my lousy ford and it's worthless 1 wheel drive :-\
