I think you should look into a '91-95 4-door civic. Dirt cheap, dead reliable, and they'll get 40 MPG.

My boss has been trying to get me to buy a new one from him for DIRT cheap but the wife would rather keep her neon for commuting serious distances and have a 4x4 to get around if we really need it and she wants to learn to drive a 4x4 this summer sometime
