I agree I think an slightly modified 80 would do all those trails without stress and still be able to carry 5. Not sure if I'd want to be the guy riding in the 3rd row... They're getting hard to find without a billion miles and a steep price tag though.

I'd give the 100's another look. Stout/reliable drivetrain, comfort, aftermarket support and the approach/departure angles are all good. I wasn't dazzled by the price either so I bought an earlier one with a billion and a half miles. Couldn't be happier. There's a few obstacles that would concern me on those trails but mostly because I still have the stock rear bumper.

There's my bias opinion. Good luck in your search,

Andrew

Just a plug for a JKU. While not a V8, the 3.6L v6 isn't quite what I'd call powerful, but not a slouch at all. The "right" camping trailer could work pretty well behind one. At EJS this year there were two guys near me at Pack Creek Campground towing 16'ish camp trailers with their JKU. One Jeep was lifted and modified and the other was pretty stock. I think if you modded and lifted your JK correctly while thinking about towing, you might meet your goal vehicle? We're seriously considering snagging a smaller camp trailer (selling our quad bunk) to be able to tow behind the JKU.

The JKU will fit my family (3 kids---16, 13, and 8 years old) for trips. Still has storage as well.

The JKU is NOT a Toyota so you'll have to get over that (whatever that means---I REALLY tried to buy a '12 or '13 Tacoma and just liked the Jeep better so I have driven a Toyota but not long term--I wanted to be uber-impressed with the Tacoma but wasn't---It's likely a good rig, but I had higher expectations after the reputation Toyotas have)

If you're sticking Toyota, I don't know why the V8 4Runner wouldn't be HIGH on your list. You'd have to pick your trailer carefully (again) but you'll do that anyway.

not sure that I'd tow this, but

....something like this seems somewhat reasonable with the JKU.

Blasphemy. As much as I agree with everything you said, talk like that will get you black balled from here.

I actually agree with you guys. Tacoma's are not great at anything, but are ok at everything and last forever: not great mpg, can't tow much, not super comfortable, but will perform what they can for 300K miles.

well, against better judgement probably I bought a 2007. it has 99K on it. Firestone AT tires and aftermarket wheels. leather, DVD, etc. Hoping its going to be a good truck. its getting delivered tomorrow from South Dakota. My BMW lost me a ton of money. But I'm in pretty good with this new vehicle. i ended up with about $2K in equity with the Toyota. i was $4000 in negative equity with the old BMW

well, until i get to move to Utah, Hoping for September now (company trying to get work to hire me says), my wife won't let me do much.

But secretly:

Winch
Bumpers
sliders
small lift to fit 285's
and a rear locker
exhaust system

I'm keeping the Range Rover for more hardcore stuff. The Yota will be a backcountry / road trip warrior.

here it is. the only thing its missing is a sunroof and factory fog light. i already ordered an iPod and Bluetooth integration kit. i think i'll order a leveling kit for it and maybe an LED light bar. its going to stay mostly stock, my wife said no major mods.
