trailer brakes

That is exactly the point!

As was mentioned in my original post, trailer brakes on the trailer work fine. I have not had any real hard emergency stops, but the truck stops about as well with the trailer as with out.

The shop involved is in Tooele.

What do you mean by "trailer brakes on the trailer work fine"? How is this accomplished? (the question has been raised several times in the thread without a response)

  1. Your trailer brakes work with a different vehicle that has a controller?
  2. Your vehicle actually has a controller?
  3. The trailer brakes work magically?
  4. Your trailer actually has surge brakes?

There is a very clear difference towing either of my trailers (7000#, 14,000#) when the trailer brakes are working or not or even at different settings. That is towing with a 9500# eXcursion.

And I agree that while possibly well meant, the shop statements were over the top.

As per distribution hitch etc, there are no problems what so ever with how the trailer tows. Been using it for several years, including locally, trips to Salina as well us the canyons above Grantsville with up to 5 horses in it and have never felt the list bit unsafe.

The one and only point of the post was to confirm my suspicion that a mechanic as using untruthful scar tactics to get my wife to spend money on something other than what she went in for.

End of story.

I agree that the mechanic should have kept his opinions to his self, depending on how he brought this concern to the wife's attention. What you have now done is posted on a public forum That you town a heavy load with out the proper braking system and are potentially putting our wives and family in danger.

Not end of story!

I was just being a smart a$$ with the hitch comment. IMHO if you need a weight distribution hitch you either need A. A bigger truck B. A different trailer.

The Mechanics tactics were inappropriate but his point was valid.

You still have not clarified if your truck has a built in controller or not. How do you know if your trailer brakes work?

For the sake of your family and horses, and my family, please install a controller. One has even been offered. It's hard to imagine why you would not want to do this.

C. You want as much control as possible of your 22,000# combined load.

Wow, there's a lot of either ego or carelessness in this thread. There's nothing wrong with mitigating risk. That's why you bought a truck in the first place, right? Instead of just using a Pinto wagon? :)
