Transfer case rebuild

Maybe I'm dumb or maybe it hasn't happened but has anyone done a write up on a 231 rebuild? I think my chain is sloppy and admittedly I have done much since I had skippy do the SYE on it years and tears ago. Lately I've been having a hard time getting it out of 4wd which is new a couple years after I got the NOVAK upgrade. If someone could send me a write up before I hit the YouTube that would he great. I'm not incompetent but don't want a 3 hour job becoming weeks worth because I'm uninformed. Thanks.

The last few cases I rebuilt I used a boot tray from Lowe's to control the mess. There will be a mess. That case does have pry tabs to get the case halves apart, if you try and pry at all in the sealing surfaces it will leak. Be sure to use a good RTV going back together, I prefer Ultra Gray or Powerstroke oil pan sealant.
If you want to minimize wear afterwards, BG Synchro Shift II is very good but a little pricey.

I just rebuilt a 208. I bought a good set of snap ring pliers and took my time. My biggest challenge was making sure to put everything back together in the correct order (which I did with a couple of reminders). I don't live too far from you in West Haven if you'd like a second set of eyes (or hands).

They aren't bad to do, I have some pictures of my son's NP231 torn apart over on garagejournal on my projects thread but not a step by step.

Good snap ring pliers that were suggested is a good starting point. As for sealant, I'm a fan of the GM ES (Engine Sealant) and use it almost exclusively.

A couple of things to point out, it may be easier to remove the detent when assembling the shift forks if you're not used to assembling these. Also look at the leading edge of the teeth on the shift collar, if they are worn at all replace the gear as it will not want to stay in 4-low. This is one of the most common areas I have seen when people have issues with their transfer cases popping out of 4-low or not wanting to stay in 4-low.

Lastly, clean the strainer and pickup tube very good, you would hate to spend that time and money rebuilding just to flush junk right back through it.
