Trimming down wiring harness (Shane?)

Only to eliminate some wiring harness mass that I am currently having difficulty finding room for. I'm afraid to bust into the engine wiring harness. The interior wiring harness I managed to whittle down from a forearm-thick mass if wires to about four wires for the gauges, ignition, and starter. It really made a huge dent in the amount of crap I have to conceal under the dash. I would very much like to do the same for the under-hood wiring, but I'm afraid of taking a running engine and rendering it nonfunctional. :ugh:

thats how I am, even with a Painless harness...I am ahving a hard time finding a place for it...once the cowl is on it will hide it but till then it looks like a mess..simplicity is a good thing. :D

There should be some cruise control wiring too, right?
My YJ never had AC or cruise. So I don't know if the wiring is there or not. There are some random plugs in the engine compartment that are not plugged in to anything. I could eliminate those wires, but I don't know if it would make any significant difference in the mass that's left, and I don't know if it would be worth taking ALL the wiring out of the stock looms.

It should be prewired for both. If you ca can verify that you engine and mine use the same wires for each application, I am down with some trial and error cutting on my XJ while it is running. I won't be free until Saturday though. When is your comp? Mines a 92 XJ.

The engine wiring should be the same (or damn near). My first comp is the first weekend in June, but I NEED to go wheeling before that. ;)

From the pictures you have, it looks like you have done a better job eliminating more wires than I have. I actually got tired of messing with a lot of it and stuffed it all in a corner.

Well, the offer is there, I would be very interested in helping, as it helps my cause down the road.

 That's what I'm hoping to avoid. I don't really have any corners left in the buggy to stuff anything.

Have you kept track of what you have deleted? Such as highlighting the parts of the schematic? I would be very interested in seeing that if you have.

Now I might have to take a close look at yours to see what else I can delete out of mine.

When is it going to be done? I'm finally bringing mine up from Price this weekend. Lets go wheelin! :D

No. Basically, when I took the harness out I labled the wires that were connected to things (gauges, starter, ignition...). I used my shop manual to determine what wires to use for the gauges and stuff previously. Yesterday I took every wire that ended in a plag that wasn't plugged in to anything, traced it all the back to it's start, and cut it. What you see is what was left. From what is left, the black wire is ground, and I'm going to cut it and ground each gauge to the chassis, instead. The yellow wire is the starter, and it's unneccessarily complicated, so i'm going to cut it, and replace it with a single wire from my starter button to the starter solenoid. The wiring that I eliminated was largely stereo, and lighting related.

Hey, I wanna play. My XJ is all full of badassedness. I gotta pick up a new battery on Friday, then I can school you doorless pansies. ( I really just need an excuse to get a close look at Shane's rig.)

I wanna see you butt slide across the hood. If ya can't, it ain't real Duke.

Write down what exactly you did with your wiring, I will be hounding you when I do mine, so it will be easier for you if you can reference yourself. ;)

I'll tell ya what. I'll save all the wiring I cut out in a box, and you can come pick up the box and match up every wire with the one on your snowflake. :D
