tube fenders and state law

Even with tube fenders, you still need to cover the top of the tire to the edge of the tread to be legal, which would make for some ugly tube fenders.

If your thinkin along the lines of the Poison Spyder Fenders:

1. With 33's and 8" rims they cover the tires enough to have "tire coverage".

2. There a pain in the ass to install.

3. Look kinda stupid on a TJ (Spyder kind does)

4. Look better if used in a larger tire/more lift application.

5. How do I know? Installed em and couldnt stand it, answer, go back to stock fenders.

This is just my opinion. I looked up the UT laws on lift, only states it must have 95% tire coverage to avoid throwing debris.

Utah Code -- Title 41 -- Chapter 22 -- Off-Highway Vehicles

Off-Highway Vehicles...aren't those ATV's and dirt bikes? as opposed to jeeps and trucks?

Here's the lift law: Title 41 Chapter 6 Section 148.29-33
http://www.rockymountainextreme.com/showthread.php?t=918&highlight=lift+law (thanks Shawn)

(2) If the wheel track is increased beyond the O.E.M. specification, the top 50% of the tires shall be covered by the original fenders, by rubber, or other flexible fender extenders under any loading condition.

Doesn't that apply to "Off-Highway Vehicles" such as 4 wheelers, dirt bikes, and other non-street legal vehicles?

Sorry, if you plan on passing safety, the law was changed this year. It says

Section G:
1. Check vehicle tires for proper size and weight load ratings.
Check that fenders and mud flaps are in place when required*

REJECT vehicle

a) Tires do not meet proper load rating per axle as determined by OEM specifications.
b) Tires are mounted on wheels that are not within tire manufactures specifications.
c) Tire tread is not fully covered by existing fenders or fender extenders.
d) Rear Tires do not have the top 50% of the tire covered by mud flaps.*
e) Rear mud flaps are not as wide as the tire.*
* Mud flaps are required on any vehicle modified from original OEM specifications/. This includes larger tires or any alterations to the frame or suspension

That is from the 2004 Official Safety Inspection Manual for Passenger Vehicles and Light Trucks

Looks more like a new regulation (interpretation) rather than a new law. I don't recall seeing any changes to the law last session. Looks like the regulation is catching up and is consistent with the law we changed.
