Turbo Questions

So I have been stuck with the 2.5 4 cylinder in my 1995 YJ........ of course I would like to do a 5.3 or 6.0 swap but the lack of funds and lack of wiring know how keep me from doing so.....

So has anyone turboed there 2.5 and how did they like it ???? Is it a bad idea ??? i have fabricated multiple Twin turbo kits for CTD trucks so fabrication shouldnt be a problem just wondering if the pay off would be worth the time involved.....I have a turbo off a 1.8T volkswagen that i wanna use... I realize it will be a little small for full power potential but should give me plenty of umph for getting over the rocks with little to virtually no turbo lag....

What fuel system mods am i gonna need I only thinking about running form 5-8lbs of boost

i wouldn't run one for crawlen, bogging maybe, check out Avenger Superchargers! they make super chargers for lots of jeep motors.

more than likely while crawing your not going to get the rpms up high enuff to get the full effect out of the turbo, but for highway driving there will be a noticable effect for obvious reasons

I don't think sizing and fabrication would be too difficult to figure out on that motor. My concern would be timing and fuel delivery. I'm not sure how "adjustable" the computer is on the 4cyl Jeep motors :-\ It would be a lot of fun though--I like turbo's for their performance in higher elevations. My n/a 20R can't get out of its own way at anything over 8000 feet

I understand the lack of performance in lower rpms and im fine there but there have been a few times where i have laid into it hard and just havent had the power there like i wanted sometimes i would like a little more wheelspeed on the long loose climbs and playing in the snow and since i have the turbo and probably all of the bends to fab this up i figured why not give it a shot ................

you will need to look into fuel delivery and figure out how much boost the stock motor can handle. i know a stock 4.0 can only handle about 6psi of boost, i cant imagine a stock 4cyl can handle much more than that either.

This really doesn't help but I used to wheel with a guy in Abq that had a turbo on tj(yj maybe) 4 cylinder.

The main thing I remember about it though is that he would tell everybody to take out their t-stat so their engine would "run better"...

(that actually resulted in an internet argument that almost got me suspended from NMVJC.com (.org?))

So I guess all I have to add is that it has been done, maybe you could search NMVJC for that guy... but if you find him remember that (years ago) he had no understanding of what a modern factory ECC does with air/fuel or that oil has to be warm to make power...

I know the 4 cylinder runs a lower compression ratio than the 4.0 so it would help in that department and as far as fuel mods i think if i stay around 6 pounds of boost and run premium fuel i should be good to go

there was an article in JP two or three issues back about this very thing.

IMHO, a OHV turbo4 rockcrawler with a stick would be a bit pointless.

I saw Chris Durham on Poison Spyder this year during EJS and his TJ with 40's and no lift was out there and it seemed to be doing fine. It is a turbo 4 banger. I talked to him briefly but mostly about his suspension. I can't find really anything about the turbo but maybe someone is better at google tahn I am.

well if your worried about fueling there is always maga squirt stand alone set up, just have to build a simple harness and mother board for it. then you can tune with a lap top.

that turbo should work good will spool fast with a 2.5l motor as the 1.8 gtis spool it pretty quick.

a gti will make over 300 wheel with a ko3 so it will suite you fine.

and compression wise i would at least invest in arp head studs and maybe a second head gasket or head spacer.
