Turboing a 4.0????

the turbo im going to use is off a 96 eclipse 2.2ltr, the model # is TB2566. it has an internal waiste gate set at 9lbs, is that to much for the 4.0? do i need to get an external waiste gate for like 6 or 7lbs? whats your opinions?

im not spending 5k on a turbo kit, thats just stupid:confused:

im not goin to be pushing a ton of boost 9lbs at most so the eclipse turbo should be just fine

Get the right turbor, or don't do it all. All you're doing is setting yourself up for failure. It won't work right, and then you will be right back here asking why it's not working right. ;)-_-

Off ebay and they were like $40 shipped.... 2000 Ford Mustang Cobra w/4.6l...XR3E-C5B is the Bosch #.

Besides the "R" model, there wasn't a cobra mustang for 2000. Most likely low mass 24LB from an 01.

BOT. Why do you feel that you need a turbo?

Having built custom engines (including forced induction) in a previous life, I can speak on the pros and cons. Forced induction has NO place on a trail rig. The only guys I've seen running turbos ETC successfully are COMP guys. They also run 104+ octane and spend the $$$ to make it work right.

I posted earlier regarding Jason at RR. He just switched from the 505 kit to a vortech supercharger. He can add alot of insight to this thread.

Research. Lots of great resources regarding turbocharging on the web. A turbo for a 2.2 liter motor is going to begin boosting on a 4.0 about 100RPM and run out of steam at less than 3000, where the wastegate will be blowing off constantly. Running that little turbo that way will KILL your mileage, and overspeed the turbo. Lots of factors.

Sure boost will build as soon as you step on the gas, but it won't be worth a damn on the street or highway.

SUre I have considered a turbo setup, with dual turbos meant for 80s Dodge cars. But, for the trouble and expense of doing it right, I might as well find a V8 ZJ since the I want the top end power for my commute through the mountains.

You are polishing a turd with putting a turbo on a 4.0. If you want to get more power a SBC transplant is better in EVERY category.

Regardless the part number and specs are correct. They are Bosch injectors, generation 3. They have 4 holes instead of 1 and don't use pintels.

no way in hell is a turbo kit cheaper.

Injectors, new turbo(the one you have will not work), intercooler, ignition, computer programming, dyno time to get the tuning right, premium gasoline for the rest of the rigs days...Meat is right, start keeping a tab!

turbo, intercooler, blowoff valve, and piping cost me 200 bucks, so no it wouldnt be cheaper to do a sbc swap. just need to get the injectors $60 on ebay, oil cooler lines $20 at evco, hood scoop $40 on summit racing, filter $20 at checkersand exhaust done $100. so maby 250 more $ to finish it, maby less if i do the exhaust myself

Proper tuning is the most important facet of a turbo'd engine. What are your plans for that? If you are planning on running 9lbs of boost on stock (jeep :ugh:) internals, tuning is critical.

I couldn't find any specs online for your turbo, but it doesn't look to promising for being a feasible candidate for your application. Also just curious how much are you willing to spend on this project?

I think you should go with a DIY turbo over the small block chevy just to be nonconformant :D

im pretty sure i can adjust the linkage on the internal waiste gate to open at 6 or 7lbs. i plan on running colder plugs and with the intercooler that should help out alot. we have a dyno at weber state so i can tune it there. im also going to run bigger injectors.
