turning of the knuckles

I just want to say that I think everyone should be talking you out of the shackle reversal instead of debating the knuckle turning.
Just like we try to talk everyone out of building an XJ in the first place?

OK let's see here........

First of all, someone mentioned using a plasma cutter. There is an attachment for some plasma cutters called a gouge tip. It can be used for just such a surgery. Check out the article on www.BC4x4.com on the plasma cutter review--I think that's where I saw the article. Also on BC I *think* I remember an article on cut and turning knuckles. I somewhat agree with the prevailing popular opinion here......not sure it is needed for a waggy axle. Yes, it will give your pinion angle more 'up' angle to keep it out of the rocks.....but your steering may be just fine as is (in other words, no better than not turning them). I think I only have about 3* of caster in my front 44 and it steers fine.

hmmm

ya know i never really thought of whether or not to do it... that would be killer if i didn't have to. maybe i will just set my perches right and see how it does. i am only going to be driving it from trail to trail in moab. i wonder what the negative effects are, do you think it will steer crappy or possibly break more joints from stress? i guess it depends on how steep the angle is. i will have to look at it more.

and why would you talk anyone out of shackle reversal? think about suspension! to me it makes total sense to have the fixed end forward and the shackle end backward. you are going forward mostly aren't you? besides that hitting your shackles on crap you are trying to climp bends the main leafs. i've done it. also with srs the tire is not fighting what it is climbing as much right? and the angle of the leaf spring makes it easier to climb.
sorry i opened such a big can of worms... but i think it is interesting.

so whats the verdict? should i put the perches on and see how it goes? should i pay a shop to do it (how much does it cost)?

I'm not as familiar with Xj frames, but a reason not to do SR on a CJ is that the frame will crack. Frames on CJ's at least are not up to the stress of the solid mount on the front. YJ frames on the hand are better for this type of thing. The other problem is the tire tends to stuff into the back of the fender and you'll need a longer splined driveline to make it work. Now on an XJ you can design some of these problems away, but I dunno about the frame one......after all, XJ's don't have frames! :D Do you research first, there are lots of guys running leafs on XJ fronts out there. I am a big leaf spring fan, don't get me wrong.

they are extremely vile....I'm on #4 now and I wish that I had never bought it. The only good thing about it is the 4.0. I want my Tacoma back in a bad way :(
