George Tying was a newspaper guy who came west in the early 1900's to prospect. An avalanche hit his cabin and he was inside and was killed- sometime around January. They couldn't find him until April or so. I have heard his claim was a pretty good one in it's day. There is more to it than that- that's all I can remember. Some of the shafts he mined were still accessible about 15 years ago.

Sweet! Thanks. Might have to check it out! KENNETH !!

Tyings family???

Nope, Tyng never owned the mines, rather he leased them from the Miller Mining and Smelting company... And his family was never interested in mining... he did have one son that continued to work his claim through the end of the lease.

But I will tell you anyway... Snowbird

Snowbird has bought (and horse traded) alot of property all over Miller Hill, mostly consisting of patent mine claims from the 1880's-1930's. At one time, an executive of Snowbird was quoted saying something to the effect "our resort will stretch over there one day"... I'll have to search for it...

They will never be able to shut access down completely... In the case of Mineral Basin, Utah County claims it as a Class "B" road. Miller Hill is protected by RS2477 and Utah 10 yr statute. Many of the roads up Big & Little Cottonwood SHOULD be open, there is just no money to fight the big guys ar times...

Snowbird has been running snowmobiling and cat skiing excursions on Miller Hill for at least 3 years, not sure if they still plan to expand (or if the USFS will let them)

There was an article in the Daily Herald a couple of weeks ago that said snowbird was planning to have lifts on that side of the mountain in the next three years. It sounds like we'll probably lose some access, that sucks.

I found some more info on him, the web page is actually down so I found a back up of it :) Anyway, the art work and the next page link may be messed up, but the text is still there. There are four pages.

I am sure they won't shut down access, but I bet one day in the not too distant future the area looks like a Deer Valley or Snowbasin neigborhood, You will be able to drive all the way up there on paved roads and look at the 10 million dollar ski in and out mansions.

Interesting part of the story in which his workers "gaurded the door" in fear of wolves??? Surely some savy mountain men such as miners didn't truly think their were wolves at the time? Were there?

Government led extirpation efforts greatly reduced the number of wolves over large areas of their original territory which included Utah and much of the lower 48 states. By the 1930s, the majority of wolves through the Rockies had been exterminated through predator control reduction programs; the last verified wolf kill in Utah occurred in 1930 in San Juan County and the last wolf in Yellowstone Park was killed in 1930 by a National Park Ranger.

Currently there aren't supposed to be any wolf in Utah... I know people who claim to have seen wolf in Utah.... I know there are wolverine in Utah and there supposedly aren't.

Thanks for the info...

I do know that a wolf was recovered in the Logan area lasat year, it was captured and put back in Yellowstone where it had come from...
