Unimog

So one of my unimog buddies called a couple of weeks ago saying he was looking at a unimog in SLC and asked if I would go take a look at it for him.
It is an ex-army HMMH (High Mobility Material Handler) used for unloading heavy loads in rough terrain. It is basically a 406 with a forklift on the front and a 6000 lb knuckle boom crane on the back. Anyway, there is a local guy here who bought a couple at a government auction and was letting it go at a reasonable price. The seller is Sheldon and Sam Smith over at Lange Originals. I guess they build jeep top lifts and other custom stuff.
Anyway, my friend Ron asked me to pick the unimog up for him so he could come and get it over the weekend. I did that and drove it home. It has the stock motor, so maybe 110 horsepower, and weighs 16,000 lbs. This nets it a top speed of 47 miles per hour. Being the newest generation of this model, it does have a nicer transmission than mine - it is a 16 speed. It has a PTO powered hydraulic pump that runs the crane. When it was new, it came with hydraulic impact wrenches and hydraulic chain saw that run from the rig.
Since I had it at home for a few days, I had to find some excuses to use the knuckle boom crane. The best was I had this 3500 lb block of concrete that I put along the shore in my lake. At one time, I was going to line the shore with them. That never panned out, so i lifted it out with the crane and moved it over by my shed to use as a retaining wall.
