Unimog or Volvo Axles

After reading 4mogger and a few other build-ups with Unimog axles, I was wondering if anyone around here is running mogs, volvos, or portal axles. It has kind of peaked my interest and I am planning something, as soon as money allows of course.

They used to have a place in ogden that sold the mogs, something like killer axles.com rings a bell, some guy from germany. The biggest thing I think would be replacment parts like the portal boxes. Can't just go to auto zone to grab one. I would grab some 406's if it were me I think

Yes in my reading I found killeraxles in ogden that sells used unimog axles. I may just have to stop by and take a look. They also sell the C.T.I.S. and lockers for the mog axles.

Daniel, the Killer Axles guy, moved away a year or two ago and sold his inventory to Rob Pickering of Colorado Unimogs. I can get you his contact info if you are interested.

I'm intimately familiar with the 406/416 axles and somewhat familiar with the 404 axles if you have any questions. I also have a buddy with a pair of 404 front axles he would probably part with. He started narrowing them for a buggy he was building, but the project got shelved due to other interests.

I've heard good things about portals but a few downers as well. One you need the clerance for the raised pumkin and the portals but more of a torque on the attachment points so axle wrap can a problem.

Oh yea some of the Mog axles only have one gear ratio (7.something to 1) so you better be running a huge tire.

I"ve seen several times where portal boxes decided to liberate themselves from the rest of the axles. There was a guy on pirate that had some sweet steel replacment/upgrades. They were a cool grand each. I will stick with the stuff I can get local, and fix in a weekend, unless I move to Europe.

I ran narrowed Mogs for 2 years and have this to say. RUN, don't walk, run in the opposite direction. You couldn't give me a set. BTW, the link angles require extremely tall mounts which complicates where and how you can mount them. If you do decide to run them, keep them stock. It's much easier to find replacement parts. In fact you should buy an extra set of axles just for part because they are hard to come by.

I used to really want ot run a set of mogs, infact I almost did in my buggy till I saw Bart's failures (at literally just about every comp right Bart?). That changed my mind very quickly. I might mess around with them if a set was given to me but I wouldn't spend a dime on them.

The first year it was the first or second obstacle at every comp except for Cedar City where I made it to the 4th. It was much better the second year when I found out the reduction units were directional, the housing was bent and the locker would sometimes not fully engage.

The one good thing about Mogs is that if you have the spare parts, they are pretty easy to fix.

What are the going under that would need such big axles, or would it be more for the cool factor?

I would just put my $ into 60's, mainly for the reason of ease of getting parts and the amount of $ they would be.
