Upgraded wheels & tires on a '03 4Runner

Some of you remember our '03 Toyota 4Runner... it's been my wife's DD for several years and our occasional trail/camping rig. We're currently looking for a fuel efficient DD for my wife and the 4Runner will be transitioning to more of a weekend warrior, nasty-weather Winter-driver. This isn't a build thread by any means, but more of an update of what has been a very reliable and fun to drive 4x4. Hopefully in the future we can add an ARB bumper, winch and a pair of rock sliders.

Several years ago I added an OME suspension and it really helped out the 4Runner. - http://www.rme4x4.com/showthread.php?65334-Install-amp-Review-OME-lift-on-03-Toyota-4Runner

The 4Runner had a set of 265/70/17 BFG AT's and they were perfect for daily driver duty... believe it or not, but we got 65,000 miles out of our BFG's! And it's not like they never saw trail time, they've been over Imogene & Black Bear Pass as well as many other rocky roads. The AT's did their job and served their time... despite having decent tread left, they were weather checked and not wearing well due to a needed alignment. My wife mentioned liking black wheels and that got me thinking... I had a set of FJ Cruiser wheels from the buggy and we picked up a set of near-new BFG 255/75/R17 KM's that were take-off's from a JK Rubicon. A quick mount & balance and we were now sporting a slightly taller, skinnier tire and some good looking factory, black steelies.

It's a little louder on the road and there are a few more vibes, but the Mud terrain pattern will work better off the pavement. I'm already looking forward to the first trip offroad!

Funny you just did this, my ladies tires on her FJ are nearing the end of their life span. She also wants black wheels, and I've been looking around trying to find a set of Rubicon take offs to give her a more aggressive tire.

Love the look!! As Kevin said siping will help a ton, in the snow, off road, rock, really everywhere. It is even supposed to make them less noisy and last longer. I haven't done it to my KM2s but not because I don't want to, just haven't had time. I sure hated driving it this winter thou.

Nice, I was seriously impressed with those tires for the short time I had them

I'm not sure that Mud Terrains are ideal for this vehicle, but time will tell. I really liked the AT's, but these were a good deal compared to new AT's.

I am loving my tall skinny's on my Tacoma 255/85R16. I need to get my on 03 4runner looking like yours.

Good to hear, our 4Runner is slowly coming together!

I think this is a great combo, you can find those wheels on Ebay for $65/ea shipped and Rubicon take-offs aren't that hard to find.

Word, 255/85 is where it's at. Greg, if those are anything like the KM2s, siping will help a LOT in the icy stuff.

Yes, I plan to sipe them! We've got plenty of time between now and next Winter, but I realize the benefits of sipes! The road noise isn't too bad with these KM's, it's noticeable but not loud by any means. I have seen how much these tires like to pickup rocks after driving down a gravel road! Then they toss them off next time you get on the freeway!
