UROC West #3

Despite all the crap that UROC has been catching, they still know how to put on a great event! The course was awesome. It was hard enough that we weren't getting negative scores, but the obstacles were all driveable if we didn't screw up too badly. The course was also a nice mix of technical gates that make you think, and vertical walls that make you commit. Very fun. The first day we started first on probably the easiest course of the weekend. We played it safe and got a decent score. The next obstacle we rolled, drove it back on it's wheels, and then hit a banner shortly before the exit gate. The obstacle after that we rolled again, drove back onto our wheels again, but this time we finished it with a good score. We finished the first day in third place. The second day we rocked out first three obstacles. The fourth was one that only one person in the semi-mod class finished the first day. We took a couple "strategy" cones, and where three-quarters through it when I heard a bang, and the Atlas shifters fell to the left. We sheared off the bolts that hold the motor mount onto the block. We took one more cone that we didn't have to take in an attempt to finish the course with an un-mounted engine. We got through the end, and headed for the BFG trailer to try to fish the broken bolts out. We ran out of time and had to just nose through the start gate of the last obstacle for 40 points. Our efforts were good enough for 3rd place. Awesome event, UROC is definately learning from its past mistakes.

have all their trophies this year looked like that? Looks kinda neat:D...

good to hear you had a good time, would you have still been in the running for first had you been able to complete the last obstacle?

Yeah, cool trophy. Custom made, and way cooler than the cheesy plastic ones.

No, not a chance. Brad and Roger Lovell are in thier own league. They beat us by about a million points. Ben and Joey were way ahead of us too (about half-a-million points). We did as well as we could have with four year old technology. We're way to tall, wide and heavy to compete with those guys (or anybody, really). However, our sponsors and finishing each event in the money, I'm saving up the cash to build a new rig at the edge of the rules for next year. :D The obstacle we just nosed through was probably the hardest of the whole event. I think only Lovells finished it with a score in our class. We probably would have 40'd it anyway.

Oh yeah. Our finish bumped us up to 3rd in the series, too. Now if only I could get Lovells and Ben/Joey to skip St. George... :D

Yep, pretty fun event...a couple questionable calls here and there (one resulting in someone being booted from the event due to the fit they threw over it), but overall good judging and decent organization. There was a distinct lack of spectators compared to past events though--wonder if the population in/around Cedar is tired of watching?

I didn't do nearly as well as Braden, but still managed an 11th place finish. Two 40's on the last two obstacles the first day realllllly hurt, and one of those was a broken Tcase. (didn't I cure that by swapping in that D300???) The first three Kurt and I were working really well together, and were sitting in third place. The 40's knocked us down to 10th.

Second day, after a feverish morning of getting the replacement Tcase built and installed (HUGE thanks to Shan the marshall for getting it to me!!), we worked the courses well again. We got one 40 for a time-out, but it turned out just about everyone was timing out on that particular one. After that, we finished a course most were 40-ing, then absolutely kicked ass on the next. Best score of the day, 4 points.

I was really hoping for a top 10, but this finish moved us up four spots in the series, tied for 11th.

Congrats Braden & Carl... sounds like those tires are really hookin' up! ;)
Pffff... These tires rock! Seems like they hook up better the more worn they get. If Maxxis made the Creepy Crawler in a 33 I'd for sure be buying a set for the TJ. I don't think the poor little four popper could turn a set of 37s. :( I was watching some guys with Toyo tires try to climb some stuff... I felt bad for em.

Great Job guys!!!
I wish I could have kept the jeep running for Linda. I thought our problem was fuel but it turned out to be a bad coil. We got towed back to the trailer 4 times and by the time I started to diagnose the problem it would start up and run fine until half way through the next course.
After Linda's endo over and back on all fours it died trying to get back up the wall on B4. Then on B2, after making the first wall it died again on the second wall. Linda had the best time at any event even with the bruises she got on the roll. I on the other hand was very frustrated not finding the problem with the engine.
All in all it was a very good event. We will do better in St. George. Linda is all stoked up for it.

Good job Kemps and everybody else.

I had a great time and thought the courses were awesome. I thought UROC put on a fine event. The smaller crowd was probably due to less advertising or the fact that it was the 3rd crawl in Cedar City this year. Personally, I prefer the small quiet events but realize we are all out there to draw numbers.

Craig - I should have introduced myself but was caught up in the competition.

Braden - Get that new rig built. I will see what I can do about skipping St. George but I don't think it is going to happen!

See all you guys in just over a week!
