Using a Tablet as a GPS device

I'm sure every tablet manufacturer calls it something different, but you want to make sure it has true GPS. Some phones/tablets don't have true GPS and they use the cell radio to triangulate position based off cell towers. If it says it has GPS, it has GPS.

My nexus 7 gps works great, I just precache my topos. Cheap, nice screen. Wish it had a rear camera though. You will want to figure out how to use your app before you leave your wifi at home.

Totally Awesome
Okay I've been messing around with Trimble Navigator Pro

It uses All Tops Maps as a base map I used to use that program a lot when I was a surveyor

It seems to save all the maps as I scroll through them when I'm online. I'm going to see if it actually works today I'll turn off my data while driving and see I'd the maps show up while on a back country drive in northern Wyoming

When I had an android device I bought backcountry navigator. That thing is awesome. I loved the topographic maps on it

You'll need to pre-cache, or pre-download the maps you want before driving out there. The tablet gathers the info from the maps via your data connection.
