Last Saturday I made my annual trip into Wyoming to look for deer.
Our experience fit very well with what has been reported in that area, a winter kill in the 2022-23 winter of 60-70% for deer and even higher for pronghorn as they also suffered a pneumonia outbreak. Total deer we saw was about 30% of what we usually see and none of the huge, old bucks that draw me up there (they come out weak from the rut and are among the first deaths in a harsh winter). No a single pronghorn was seen, fewer eagles but a handful of moose.
Did also get to spend some time with a small band of wild horses, which is always fun.
