For an upcoming trip I plan on carrying my handgun. I do not currently have a concealed permit. I was just wondering about the laws to carry a gun in my truck and on my person?

I had an officer tell me that it's not concealed if it's unloaded and stored separately from the ammo. I have no cite for that though, and would love to see it in writing.

Your vehicle is an extension of your home, and you can keep a loaded gun in it. For out of the vehicle you must have the gun in plain view (like on your hip, shirt tucked in) And CANNOT have a round in the chamber.

That's commonly referred to as the "Castle" law.

Why not just get the permit (for after the trip of course)

More than can't have a round in the chamber, it has to be "unloaded" which by Utah law is no round in the firing position and two mechanical actions to firing.

My advice jentzschman, take a night and go get your CFP. :)

"Utah unloaded" for a semi-automatic handgun is empty pipe and loaded mag engaged. The two actions are racking the slide and pulling the trigger. A revolver must have two empty chambers before a live round.

As said above, you can have the firearm cocked and locked ready to go while in your car. The cop that told you to keep the mag separate is full of shit. You are fine to open carry along the lines of being "Utah unloaded".

I'll echo: two actions from firing (charge + trigger) for non-permit carriers. Must also be unconcealed on person.

I do believe you can conceal in your OWN vehicle without a permit. But must still be two actions from firing. This was a change in law from three years ago I believe. It would be good to double check on that.

I took my class at Doug's shoot 'n' sports in Murray. Painless, and one of the few you actually shoot at.

Same, took mine at Doug's as well. I liked the fact they actually had you shoot and show you know how to properly handle YOUR weapon.

I've been back to audit Casey Davies class a few times since I took it several years ago from him. I really like Casey's presentation and information.
