High Five!
UTMA Five Mile Pass Clean-up Project
May 29, 2010
Five Mile Pass is a popular camping and staging area for off-road activities about 15-20 miles west of Lehi, Utah. This large open area is constantly in need of maintenance and clean-up. In addition to the normal trash that often blows away or is left behind by campers, some people treat the area as their personal waste disposal site. It is not uncommon to see rotting furniture and abandoned appliances littering the area.
The Utah Trail Machine Association has sponsored a number of clean-up days at Five Mile Pass over the years and is revived the tradition in 2009 with the help of the Utah 4 Wheel Drive Association and in cooperation with the Bureau of Land Management and the Utah Department of Natural Resources. The revival continues in 2010. The cleanup day will be held Memorial Day weekend – Saturday, May 29, 2010. Registration will begin at 8:00 am. We plan to remove trash and debris, clean out and rebuild existing rock fire pits in primitive camp sites, and may perform maintenance on kiosk/bulletin boards and signage. Lunch and free UTMA hats will be provided for all participants. All participants are offered a free one-year membership in the UTMA. Everyone is automatically entered in a free raffle to distribute contributions from local dealers and manufacturers of off-road equipment and gear. The BLM and Utah State Parks will be on hand to provide rider education. At the end of the day, the UTMA will lead a couple of short rides to local points of historic and/or geologic interest. Here is your chance to learn more about landmarks you likely have already seen but know little about.
This is planned as a FAMILY event. Kids old enough to help pick up loose trash are welcome. Parents will be required to supervise their younger children. It is a good opportunity to give your young ones the chance to learn the rewards and camaraderie of community service, to demonstrate your own commitment to being a responsible off-road user and good citizen, and to make a difference by supporting and maintaining our ever-shrinking off-road recreational facilities.
All too often off-roaders are portrayed as villains in movies, television, and by the major media. True, there are a few miscreants who give us a bad name, but here we have a chance to show our true colors. You have an opportunity to demonstrate your own personal commitment to your favorite family sport. If you’re planning a week-end ride for Memorial Day, please come out to Five Mile Pass and give us a few hours of your time to help maintain and preserve our right to ride!
We appreciate the support of the BLM, the DNR, and the staff of At Your Leisure in helping us organize and promote this event.
